Well, here we go again. After getting a new camera for Christmas, painting a LOT of models and setting some long term goals for myself, I have decided to start a Work in Progress thread. Comments and criticism are very welcome.

Image

First of all, My Isengard troll. I followed the 'Eavy Metal tutorial on a Mordor Troll and transferred it onto my Troll. The only thing i'm not so sure on is the skin. Anyways, here are some more photos for you. Enjoy!

There you have it. Currently on my paint station are the rest of Thorin's Company, Golfimbul and soon over 200 orcs. Stay Tuned!

Looks awesome! Nice, even detail all over and the wheel(?) in the base is a nice touch too!

Fabulous! Was your Caped Crusader outfit the inspiration for the armour colour? :)
I like the painting, love the base, and your new camera has afforded us crystal clear images to view the magnificent troll (I know, me banging on about images again but hey, a good image is worth more than 1000 words!)
Very well done!

Thanks for all the kind responses and the warm welcome. I cannot wait to show you everything I have in store.

Thanks Sid. The wagon wheel and the large stone both came from the warhammer basing kit. I had to trim a lot of it down as most pieces were for square bases. With 2 layers of sand on top, it seemed to fit in pretty nicely.

Cheers Rognarr, the black metal was done exactly the same as the 'eavy metal trolls. 3 washes of nuln oil and the chips in the armour and edging were Runefang Steel. The only thing I'm not too sure about is the skin at the moment as it is a hard look to pull off. Sithious seems to do that kinda look very well, so any comments about the skin would be appreciated.

Thanks also to Gandlaf and Oldman willow for your comments, you guys rock. Been a big admirer of both or your work for a long time.

Thanks Dorthonion, the caped crusader unfortunately wasn't the inspiration, more the dark armour of the fighting Uruk-hai. Fortunately, i do have a conversion in mind for the future. I have always loved the idea that the Dunedain keep watch over The Shire, defending them against evil, watching over them and keeping the peace. This reminded me a lot of Batman, keeping watch over the city and protecting them from evil. That's most of the inspiration for the name and the picture, as i love the idea of batman watching over the shire and protecting it from ruffians and the Nazgul. Watch out for a future conversion.

Anyhow, here is my next model finished. Really loved painting Thorin's Company, they have sooo much more detail than a lot of figures (here's looking at you plastic wood elves). Garfy's tutorials over at Tale of Painters really helped. Here is the first piece in the collection, Dwalin. Hope you like! As always C&C is welcome and encouraged. Enjoy!

Dwalin was a real blast to paint, so much detail and the model really captures his character. This model is classed (for me anyway) as a work in progress as i really want to add in his tattoos, but I'm too scared of ruining him.

Post subject:  Re: Batman's WIP (Update: Dwalin 18/1)

Small update this time. Fingers crossed I get some comments. I really love the bilbo models in the EFGT set. Really wanna buy another for the alternate pose. This is definitely a work in progress as at some point i really wanna try some OSL on the sword, although i might buy a third model for that. Anyway, here it is.

Image

Image

Here is the face. I really do not like it at all, really reminds me of Mr Beans rendition of Whistler's Mother from Bean Movie (couldnt post the link for some reason). Will be changing it the first chance I get. That's the thing I am still getting used to with Miniature photography is that a model from arms length looks amazing , but 1 cm away and it looks awful. anyways here it is, will post another photo when i've fixed the face.

Next up are more Thorin's company, and maybe a little forge world surprise.

I agree about the eyes and it's a shame, the figure is otherwise great.
I tend to do my eyes first, this may help you

Post subject:  Re: Batman's WIP (Update: Dwalin and Bilbo 20/1)

Hey guys! Finished fixing Bilbo's face, but still not too happy with it. Really getting frustrated with faces, but hey ho what are you gonna do? Anyways here's a photo of him sort of fixed.

Image

Not amazingly happy with it, might try and fix it again, see what I can do. Next up is a test model for my goblins. I was actually so happy with the way this turned out. Hope you enjoy!

Image

Image

I finished the model and I realized that I didn't want to base them how i usually do. They would only be used in scenarios set in Goblin Town, so I though why not base them with planks. Here's the Work in Progress!

Image

Used the planks on the scribe as the reference point. Next up, a rather rare figure I found on eBay the other day, it finally came this morning. Hope you can see him haha.

Image

Another figure I picked up on eBay (god I love this site when I have money). Self explanatory really.

Image

Last but my no means least is a little surprise that I am working on. I wonder how many of you can guess what it is? Can't wait to show off more!

The detail on your Isengard troll is astonishing :yay: . I actually like the way your Bilbo's eyes are painted; he seems even more likable.

:-X My local gaming store had the Invisible Frodo sitting on the shelf for more than 4-5 years. When I found out how sought after and rare he is, I went to buy him only to find out that he was sold the week before....

Your surprise picture is part of the FW Weather Top, i know because i am painting it at the moment. Its the loose piece you place anywhere.

Look forward to seeing yours.

Great stuff! Only suggestion would be for the skin tones; the difference between the crevasses and the surface is quite stark. Maybe try another layer in between?

Why thank you, really spent a lot of time on that model.

You won't have to wait too long!

Spot on, well done!

Not so invisible Frodo

Yeah, not so invisible indeed. I really want them to release an invisible Bilbo. Would love to be able to make my own, including old Bilbo with the ring and Isildur. Also gonna be working on an invisible Frodo as footprints like the rare pose. Never ever seen one on eBay, so may have to make my own.

Now, without further ado, my Forge World Weathertop. I really wanted to do it in grey, but my local Games Workshop manager convinced me to paint it in a brownish tone. He also sold me on a paint gun and black spray as well. I've still got a few bits to finish off but it is mostly done. C&C is very welcome and I hope you enjoy my piece. Also, let me know if you would like more pictures. Enjoy!

How could you not be inspired by this and a touch green with envy.
I would like to see touches of green here and there, a few moss patches will help for that aged, abandoned look.
I've used the following link a few times and it really is as simple and affective as it looks.

I like the colors. It looks very nice.

I have a request. Will you post a few more photos of the half that is not on the display/promotion model. I am going to have to build it. Some good reference photos would really help.

Image

Image

Lord Hurin made a good point. I would add some fine flocking like yellow and yellow blend or earth tone instead of paint. I like the cold gray. A little flocking will go a long way.

The store manager probably remembered the Promotion model. The lighting in the film was used to set the mood. Most people will have the impression from the movie that the Model should be cold gray.

The set was made to look like sandstone or similar, well, sandy brown coloured rock. The night scene was lit as if by the moon hence the monochromatic effect but in the scene where Aragon introduces a little more light on the subject, the colours are more visible:
Moonlight and terror first:

And now the fight gets heated:

There are others there - you can check them out for yourselves.
Great work on the terrain guys!
