Hi,


I intended getting one of these up before Christmas, to get some C&C for my recently painted Blackroot Vale Archers. Unfortunately my laptop wasnt co-operating so hopefully this time!! Please, all C&C is wanted and welcomed because I know I can improve in many areas, particularly my painting but I could do with some help as to how and where to improve!!

Ok first up is the archers I mentioned. I'm not a great painter by any means but I do feel that these are by far my best effort to date, especially the guy in the middle.

Then I have some hunter orcs I did after Christmas. (Yes I know, very random choice of models to paint!! Struggling to decide what's next from the vast backlog!!)

My next project which is currently waiting for it's next coat of paint is a rocky outcrop, highly influenced by the article by TonyB in the tomes of wisdom. So thanks for that!

Those Rohan houses are very cool. Like the bedding lofts. that would be awesome to have a battle around.

The rangers are very tidy.
A minor critique would be the eyes are slightly staring... if you can try and reduce the eye size down by painting a very thin mid brown line horizontally above and below the eye, to shrink it down.... I did a little how to on my blog...

I like the Rohan houses, especially the fact you did the insides too! Only thing I would do is trim away the straggly overhanging thatched roof bits.

Interested to see how Zirak-Zigil turns out.

Thanks for that. I do struggle with the eyes so I'll certainly read through your pointers and hopefully put them to good use on my next batch! And when I master it I'll redo these guys. Yea I was thinking about trimming the thatch alright. Just took the pics before I got to it!

Thanks. I'm looking forward to having a battle in and around it too. I checked out your WIP and your stuff is awesome!! That grond is unreal!! I can only hope to emulate that kind of work in the future!

The house is brilliant. Great attention to detail and looks very homely. Like something you'd see in Skyrim, awesome piece.

The Rohan houses are great with the slight white areas on the green roof making it look like frost. I think the stonework could be improved on and is something I can help if you wish. The method is using the old colours but you can soon get something similar with the new paints.
Paint the stone black now start drybrushing the through he following colours in this order, but using lighter drybrushing as you go. The idea is all colours can be seen to create the look.
Shadow Grey, Snakebite Leather, Codex Grey, Graveyard Earth, Fortress Grey, Bleached Bone, White. Now apply a thinned Catachan Green about four parts water to one part paint. Now a final dry brush of Fortress Grey then white.
That is how I did the below stonework

Hey thanks very much for that. I was a little underwhelmed with the stone work to be honest so I'll certainly add in the extra colours and the wash that you suggested from now on. Your wall looks much better and that hobbit hole is phenomenal. This is exactly why i decided to post some pics. To get this kind of helpful feedback from some extremely talented people!! You are most welcome. Don't forget the final drybrush after the wash has dried. You can experiment with the wash, it may be fitting to have it thicker in certain areas to add to the realism, it's down to you.

I like the extra effort you made with the details and interiors of the buildings well done. You have already been given very good advice about the washes. I would recommend a much larger flat brush when you dry brush.

A small update. I haven't managed to get through as much as i wanted to this month but such is the hobby and time constraints!

Since it was because of Tony Bs article in the tomes of wisdom, that I made this and having recently heard the sad news of his passing, I would like to dedicate this piece to his memory. I hope I did his design some justice.

This month I've also managed to paint the named wraiths, foot and mounted. No Dwimmerlaik as I haven't yet acquired him.

Ok so I haven't updated this for quite some time! Due to work commitments at a peak time for my business and most of the rest of the time looking after my young son, I haven't managed much hobby related activities. In fact since returning from the Desolation of Stockport I haven't even painted one model. However due to some serious hobby withdrawal symptoms and the fact that my son left for the other side of the planet on wednesday for six weeks, i've gotten myself back into it!!

Firstly, I have a few pics of some of the army I took to DOS. This army to my utter shock and extreme delight was nominated for best army.

So knowing I had some hobby time coming up, I ran through so many different projects I have in mind to decide which one I would give priority. I chose to finish out my basic Rohan terrain before I move on to my next terrain project.

So in over the next six weeks I hope to get a watchtower, 2/3 more basic houses, possibly a small palisade wall and also possibly a 6' by 4' modular Rohan/Westfold board done. Although with space at a premium I think the board may wait. Also as the World Cup has just started, I think I'm being overly ambitious!! I have, however made a reasonable start with my watchtower.

After looking at the two different types of watchtower I've seen (The white dwarf one and the one GBHL James recently got and reviewed), I decided I wanted some a bit different but also incorporating aspects of both designs. I wanted mine to be pretty rustic looking but also sturdy. I also wanted it to look Rohan-like but be generic enough to work as a watchtower for other races. So no horse iconography but I kept the thatched roof to fit in with my other Rohan terrain.

I reasoned that being a look-out point on the borders of the riddermark, it could conceivably be close to a wood or forest so my four uprights will be rough hewn tree trunks.

Next the look-out hut itself. Similarly rough hewn logs for the main structure with less rough planking for the floor.

Looks good except for the ladder, which is way out of scale.
I think that perhaps it could be a bit shorter. also. That would reduce the size of the ladder. Try to imagine the hands and feet of one of your figures climbing up the ladder.
That will help you scale it back a bit.

On the other hand, your painting is fabulous. How I envy your talent.
