I proudly present my days work - my Knights of Rivendell: based, assembled and ready for paint! I bought these models the day before yesterday so I've already made faster progress than ever before! Dom, 1 - lethargy, 0.

After painting are you supposed to glue riders to their mounts or not?

Personally I do glue my riders onto their mounts after painting them both.
Also looking forward to seeing your progress :) good luck

I glue good riders cos the mounts never stay on the field if the rider dies. With evil models the mounts often stay and fight so I don't glue them.

Good to see you givin the game another go! You free on March 2 to attend the 'Best Event Ever' in Sussex?

I glue mine on before painting. It's up to you what you do with the riders. I can't wait to see your progress now :-D

Generally don't glue them on, to make transportation a bit more easy. Some riders don't stay in place without glue though, depends on the sculpts.
Looking forward to seeing them painted!

Looking good so far! Just do a little each day and you'll be fine.

They look very neat and ready for painting.
I see Master Sauron lurking menacingly in the background.

Good effort! Get them primed quick smart, and they'll be done in no time!

If you battle with motivation (As I often do) I strongly recommend you batch paint them. If I paint sets of models individually by the time I get to the last few I'm sick of the sight of them, and prevaricate instead of getting the last one painted. Eventually, months later, when i get my act together, I forget exactly what paints I used for highlights, etc, and the whole thing is a nightmare!

I think a fresh thread for a fresh new attitude is very sensible.

Oh, and the real world isn't all that bad- once you get over the initial dread of meeting new people it goes much smoother. What marsbar said- come down on the 2nd of March. I plan on being there, which will be my first tournament as well, and my first venture in to gaming outside my current group of two!

This is my first attempt at painting a horse in a long time so constructive criticism is very welcome! I painted this one using a base of Rhinox Hide and a highlight of Mournfang Brown with a further highlight of Balor Brown on the mane. I want to have some variation in the colours of the horses but when I spoke to the guy in Games Workshop this was the only way I can remember. The only clues I have to how he said he painted his is that I came home with Dryad Bark and some greys! There's a gap in the Tomes of Wisdom for a horse tutorial so I'm stuck at the moment.

Some more highlighting will help around the back and hind areas.
Here's some horses I have done to give you some ideas. I just looked at a few photos of horses and tried to keep the colours realistic. It really was a try it and see.

I added another highlight to the horses backside like you suggested and I like the effect. I just put a line of the highlight colour over the edge of each muscle (a method I found in the How to Paint Citadel Miniatures book when I flicked through it in store) and I think it looks good. I'm not sure what colour to use with the horse I painted with Dryad Bark and highlighted with Gorthor Brown for the final highlight though. Anyway here's the first horse with the edge highlight:

That's a great looking horse! Those small flowers on the bases are a nice touch too. Only had flowering grass on my bases so far, but will have to copy the bushy flowers for my Hobbits.
Would probably go for a different colour on the reins and cloth though, to differentiate it a bit more. Usually use black for brown horses, but it depends on the colours of the other horses (assuming you want uniformity).

I did think that it looks a bit strange with the reins that colour. I just find that Rhinox Hide → Mournfang Brown → Skrag Brown is a really good method for leather and it also happens to be the method I used for this horse. I will probably be doing another horse this colour, one a darker brown and then a couple black and grey, although I have no idea how to paint black horses.

I really like the horses and the models so far, can't wait to see them all finished and what colour scheme youll go with.

Post subject:  Re: Dom's Rivendell Army 6/1000pts

That horse looks so much better. If you are concerned about the reins being the same colour then apply a thin wash of a slightly different brown or a red and that will give you a subtle difference.

Great effort! If you stick to the same high standard you'll have an awesome army to behold!

Three horses down, three to go and then it's on to the riders! I know that they aren't particularly good but under those billowing capes of the knights I don't think it'll matter too much.
