I have been working on Goblin Town for some time. I always though of it as a water cave. When I discovered some of the early production photos I added the wood work. I must say I enjoyed the film and have the new art books now. So it is time to work out some upgrades to better match the new films.

Image

I spit some scrap wood, and combined them with craft sticks to make the walk ways. I stained the wood originally but painted it when I discovered what was included in the box set.

Image

I made the risers from pine bark. I made sets of risers in several sizes much like with toy train sets.

Image

I made the set so that it would fit in storage boxes so that I could transport it easier.

Image

I need to add some more large platforms.
I would like to add more elements from the movie. I have some good drawing of the Great Goblins platform. I would also like to work out the swinging bridge and a new Lake.
I saw the Goblin Town section that Ranger of the North has been working on at The Sandy Springs GW Shop. It has rekindled my enthusiasm. I am going to reconsider my base section.

I tried to add a few new photos but my old computer won't recognize the camera. I will get this worked out asap.

I have not been active lately but my health is much better. Please feel free to offer suggestions and comments and even photos of your own work and ideas. I work better with a lot of input.

Pleased you are back, I have missed reading your posts

It's looking really good, but could do with some pictures that are bigger.
The back ground rock looks very effective.

The photos are Thumbnails. You should be able to view them full size on photo bucket
And thanks for the comments

This is looking really great but I'd also like to see some bigger photos - even on Photobucket they're the same size?

Looking really cool though, I particularly like the rocks. I'm thinking of doing a similar project myself at some point and due to storage limitation it'd have to be modular like yours so it's great to get some inspiration.

When you say pine bark is that something you buy? Can you get it from garden centres etc. or have you found that out in the wilds? I've never been quite sure about using real bark in my scenery but it seems to produce some fantastic results.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to some more updates!

I usually get it from dead trees. There is a new fallen pine tree on my sisters property. I only have hard wood on mine.

I can only cut 8" wide sections on a cross cut saw. I can cut up to 12" or one foot sections on the cross cut sled on the table saw. I paint it with black house paint then dry brush it with craft paints.
I will work on larger photos

Pine bark on some tree bases.

Some of the photos were re-sized in the editor program. Photo bucket seems to re-size them automatically again. I will work on it.

Very nice goblin town so far. Nice that it's all transportable.
As always the terrain is nice and were hoping to see lots and lots more of it.
The next hobbit movies can keep u busy reconstructing for a while i guess :-)

the old lake does not match the cave from the movie.

I have to work out large I need to make the lake to include the Island and the boat. If I am careful with the plan, maybe, the lake could do double duty as the Watchers pool  I am not sure I can make that work. Suggestions will be very welcome.

Thanks for the nice comments so far

Lovely work and looking forward to the next instalment. Out of interest just how much storage space do you have at your place ?

Lovely work. How did you make the big rocks ?

Post subject:  Re: Goblin Town modular project

ye might be a good idea to re-use it for the watcher. Just a general lake could be fit for all kind of terrain.

Thanks!
I am reorganizing. I have a Game room. a painting room and, a workshop plus a storage building. It comes with being old and retired

I also build a lot of terrain for our local club and game shop. Mike cast Hirst art blocks at his house but we do the glue up in the shop.My friend Dennis has a three car garage we build a lot there.

The large rocks are a combination of Christmas village mountains and pine bark. The are some resin and plaster cast rocks mixed in as well. There is at least one aquarium rock on the table in the above photo. The back drop of Goblin town is pine bark.

I have a Backlog and no game room, no painting room, no workshop and inadequate storage. It must be bad karma... or something like that.

I love the modular Goblin town - it looks great and I like to be able to rearrange things so each game can be just a little different - add interest! Very well done.

Thanks! There are problems with some of the sections falling over
But I will address that with the upgrades.

Goblins - very low engineering skills - of course things fall down :)
It doesn't help with me charging through Goblin town firing The B a z o o k a at them either!
Seriously - I love it, and I envy the facilities you have. Just to add to my difficulties I have 2 Staffordshire bullterriers, and the pup (10 months now) is very curious, as in 'I wonder could I nibble this' so everything has to be kept high and out of reach.

I've had a thought on the duel use lake. How about an infil piece. I'm thinking of a separate rock you can use an insert for Gollyms lake then swap to another water insert for the watcher lake. This insert could even be the watcher.
That way you would have one lake with a dry area in the middle for your different infils - what do you think ?
