So I cracked and bought the Hobbit starter set (as well as a new paperback copy of the novel to replace my old worn-out one) and have started painting! I have to say the miniatures are fantastic; I can't believe that they are 25mm and plastic- the detail oozes 28mm ForgeWorld- as such I have primed all the goblins... but got impatient, so held back the teeny-tiny Goblin Captain to paint without priming (EFF THE SYSTEM). I've also gone for a pallid green scheme for the goblins, because for one: green goblins are a nicer aesthetic for a fantasy realm; for two: the film's not out yet and can plead ignorance; for three: they can double up as PlagueBearers; and for four: I don't want them just to blend in with countless other 'Eavy Metal copying plain-old intellectual property themed ones. Once more, eff the system. So here's the smallest mini I have ever painted, and I'm pretty proud of the little guy considering he's so diddy! (not yet based- and flash was just about the lesser of evils, even if it blands out the colours slightly) This is also my first experience in a long time of exclusively using Citadel paints, and my first time with one of their 'dry' paints- and I have to say that I am very impressed. Sure I could have just mixed the highlight colour with white and then waited for it to thicken... but this is by far the quicker and better looking option. Plus, where the paint is thicker, you technically get more pigment for your money So I've started painting my goblins. Also been working on his highness, and I'm really proud of it so far. This mini has also reminded me how much more I like painting flesh than cloth and wood though... oh well. If I paint his face well enough people won't notice his dire, dire loincloth. I have also decided that my new favourite paint is Carroburg Crimson. Awesomesauce. Enjoy!

Wow, my Great Goblin is about the same color as yours, but yours looks so much better! I'm going for about a 50% pinkish goblins and 50% greenish goblins, just for some variety.

Thanks for all the kindness, fellows! So I finally finished the big guy! Haven't based him yet, but I'll get round to it... eventually In the mean time I've started a squad of 12 to be headed up by the little dude, plus Grinnah. Then I will make another 12 for grinnah to head up, plus the finecast captain (love the model), and then the final twelve for him to head up. then, the scribe, then, BAM- full team of goblins ready to rock and roll! Here are some detail shots of the king, plus the fist two stages of the bulk-paint: Castellan green, then a Camoshade wash.

Stunning work on that king. I myself struggle to get a good skintone on the trollsized gw figures so I can only admire this.

I must say I prefer your colour scheme much more than GWs. You make them look really dirty and I like that! The GW ones look too clean for nasty little goblinses.

The king is stunning; is it possible to give us direction for your goblins' skin-tone whenever possible? Did you use Imperial Primer? Thanks again for displaying such great looking miniatures!

I really like your painting there, the colours on the Great Goblin in particular, nice shading effects, nad I liked his staff-a-mabob , though I'd recommend saving the big guy til last. Two things came to mind when you said that. 1. GW paited them like in the film and 2. when you said "dirty" some really horrible pictures came into m head. I assume you do not mean that 'dirty'.

Thanks guys for all the feedback and nice things. Did you use Imperial Primer? Step 1: Prime in Chaos Black spray, then a light dusting of Skull White directly from above- helps pick out highlights early on. Step 2: Basecoat all skin (or whole model if easier) in Castellan Green. Step 3: Ink all over with Camoshade. Step 4: Pick out the non-inky areas with a 50/50 Castellan/Nurgling Green mix. Step 5: Pure Nurgling on just the highlights. Step 6: Drybrush any top-facing areas with Underhive Ash (if doing above-lighting. Otherwise you know your source). Step 7 (as yet unpictured- have a close up of my finished, based captain instead!): Detail, and splash on liberal washes of Agrax Earthshade, Carroburg Crimson, Camoshade, Nuln Oil, Sepia and even Druchi Violet in random places to make them seem bruised, dirty, slimy etc. Especially add a good dollop of Crimson to any pustules to bring out the boils! Enjoy!

Here are some shots of the first goblin squad WIP. Nothing clothes/weapons-wise has been painted yet, but all skin, hair, eyes and boils have been done. Just loincloths, knives and bases to go! First are some pics of the random washing. Also included some close-ups of pustules and a face just to see. Thanks for ongoing praise and critiques!
