Well, after admiring all the other terrain guides in the Tomes of Wisdom and the stuff in other people's WIP, I've created my own WIP! :D I started off with drawing off a sketch:

Image

I'm planning on two boards; one(the top half) I already have, but am going to do some other stuff to. I'll show some pics of it later on. The lower half isn't made yet, as I'm planning to fix up the first one and then do the second one. If you look at it, you can see that if you move the bottom half into different positions with different sides touching different sides of the upper half, you'll find it can fit nicely(I planned all that out. Stare at it long enough and it'll come to you). The "Tr"s stand for possible locations for permanent trees, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. You can also see rivers weaving in and out of the numerous hills on the .The "R" is where I plan to put a "Rocky Outcrop" kb.php?a=18 The "T" is where I plan to put a fully intact tower and the bottom right corner of the top half I'm building a ruined tower. It's built out of chopped up plastic leftovers from my Dwarf Rangers. I plan to add some "rotted" wood and then some more "stone" on top of that to finish it off. Here it is:

Image

We've finished the first step of the modification of the upper board; here it is:

I'm hope you can see the similarity between the sketch and the real thing! :-D As I said, this is only the first step. In completion it's going to be really green with lots of flock (I'm going to make my own: kb.php?a=190) and lichen(again, I'm going to make my own: http://terragenesis.co.uk/infopages/page368.html Found this site while browsing the forums) and some pebbly rivers! Advice and criticism encouraged!!

Very interesting. What did you use as the base of the project?

The material used for the terrain was blue insulation, if that's what you mean.

@ DMS thanks, the credit for the plastic "stones" must go to my good friend who also lead me to this site.
@ Old MW I probably found the link to that site on ur WIP or something. lol ;)

Ingenious money saving idea for the 'bricks'

I've got some more materials for the making of the flock, plaster of paris, "Swiss" glue and some really small pebbles. Will post as soon as I've got more progress and have taken some pics!

Ok, a little more done on the ruined tower:

I'm going to put another layer of "bricks" before permanently gluing the boards down and I'm going to do some weathering attempts on the boards. I'll probably find more time this weekend to do the flock, river, and sand.

So this weekend I've put plaster of paris on the places I need and also put some large stones here and there. I then started on the river banks and put sand on them.
As you can see, there is some pink here and there so once I get some paint I'll water it down until it becomes a wash and then spread it over the sand. In the future, however, we will either mix white PVA with brown or paint the river banks with the brown and then put clear glue on top of that. Which would work better in your opinion?
Here are the pics:

Thanks DMS! I really admire your great masterpieces! Especially all the free hand you do!
Much more progress has been made on the rivers. I decided to do a heavy brown wash on the pink banks and got this:

Image

I've done the other bank by now so I'll post pics of it later. Here's what both banks look like now:

Image

For the other river banks I decided to mix white PVA and brown and place the pebbles on that and got quite a satisfying result:

Image

Trying two colors of brown ended up like this. Nature is always random and unpredictable(most of the time) so I think this could just be a place where the mud was a bit of a different color:

Image

I just got my gondorian shipment the other day and I immediately glued 'em all together (all except the horsemen on the horses, I'm going to do them separately:

Image

I've already painted one horse so I'll post pics of him a bit later.
Next up: Flocking and the last river!

Always nice to play on some quality terrain, and this is shaping up very nicely indeed. Good job. :)

More flock has been added, and I have some Gondorians painted up as well. Those will be on as soon as I get pics!

This is coming together nicely my friend. What are you going to use for the river itself?

Good job so far, looking forward to seeing it finished. Homemade boards where you can build rivers, hills e.t.c into the board always look so much better than a mat with individual bits on top.

Not sure yet. I might smooth out the rough spots, paint, and then make the waves with glue. I tried it on a piece of paper and it works, but I also saw Bastion's waves made this way and liked it a lot.

UPDATE:
More flocking and a few paths:

Wow!!! Great work all round here!! The horses look great also the banner is excellent. I'm slightly jealous and envious of your terrain piece. I wish I had the room for a project of this scale. Well done mate 8)
