Painting Challenge: Ent

Image

Greetings, and welcome to the last Painting Challenge that we will run before the Awards 2010. This time we will be focusing on Ents!

Painting Challenge Guidelines:

a. There is no list of preferences this month. The miniature needs to be an Ent - any kind of Ent, generic or named (like Treebeard, Birch, Willow, ...) or have an 'Entish' look (Huorns, Old Man Willow,...).

b. Miniatures may not be painted at the beginning of the Paint-Off (assembled and undercoated is fine), and each participant should show proof of this status.

c. You may join the Painting Challenge in progress at any time, but must submit photographs of the completed miniature by midnight GMT of May 31, 2010. WIP images are welcomed and encouraged.

d. Miniatures that are completed in time will be eligible to win the Painting Challenge. The Painting Challenge will be decided by the vote of the OR community. The community will choose one winner and one runner-up from the completed miniatures. Votes should be cast not simply on painting skill, but on merit, including creativity, application of painting techniques, artist improvement, etc. The winner will receive three (3) gold coins and the runner-up will receive two (2) gold coins.

e. Winners from the previous month are able to participate in the Painting Challenge, but are not eligible to win in consecutive months.

Get your cameras and paintbrushes ready! The Ents are going to War!

Oh yeah, my proof pic!

I took a similar pic a while ago when I first got him but as you can see I've only played around with the base a little bit, this might be the nudge I need to get back into it.

If anyone is painting treebeard is it possible to put up assembling pics. There is so many little leaves I don't know where to put any of them.

Cheers

I was going to skip this one, seeing as I dont have any Ent model but...

... can anyone please post some rough measures of Treebeard? Like, How tall, what kind of base, etc.

My best guess is, well, kinda big.

Sculpting your own Ent then? Cool Mac! Can't wait to see that from you, should be great. :)

I'm going to paint mine in a different way then your average Ent, no drybrushing for me. It's all a part of my evil plan...

When I started mine (yes, not as tall as "normal" Ents) I just used the size of the base (60 mm or 2.36 in) as the main way of telling how big to make him (then as tall or short as I wanted).

Here is a pile of plastic branches I hope will turn out to be an ent by the end of the month:

And now to work to put them together!

Afternoon edit: The ent is now assembled:

Waiting for the glue to set and then to gap filling and sanding the base.

Mac, Treebeard is approx 4 inches, or 10cm high.

I'll be converting one of my own Entish creations.

That is so amazing, first you sculpt ents yourself and then even convert them. I can't wait to see the result! 8)

Here's the proof pic, from early this month. My wife's entry's proof pic is also there. I'm doing Treebeard, she's doing the Entwife.

And with assembly done, and the first paint hitting the models.

MacGothmog: I would recommend making him taller as the ents in the films as as tall or shorter, whereas in the models, he seems to be a lot shorter.

scipio.au: Cool that your wife is entering and it amuses me that she is using an entwife. However, I also think it's highly amusing that she appears to be holding twigs/sticks/branches or something and both my girlfriend and I said "No, they're my babies, get away!" lol :P

As for this month, I unfortunately can't enter. I can't afford to buy an ent specifically for this (unless someone would like to trade some of my models for one?) and I haven't the time to gather twigs/greenstuff and make one and, unfortunately, since there are no alternatives, I won't be entering.

I am interested as to how people will make the paintschemes of their ents different though ;) I await eagerly and wish not to be disappointed ^^

Thanks guys, she wanted to enter the last one (Barrow-Wights) with Army of the Dead, but since she was painting 19 of them, and is just starting to paint, she didn't get them finished..

I was stripping some old figures about three weeks ago, and found the Entwife in there, which she had never seen before and liked, so it fit perfectly with the timing of the challenge.

I'm supervising and helping with the base, so that it fits in with the other tree-folk figures we have, but the actual Entwife paint will be all hers.

Hmmm... I want to do this one. Was thinking about getting one of the majestic bear ents cause they look so much better, but I think I might just get a GW ent and then try to add some details to him, then paint. And then make an army of ents. Muahaha.
