Post subject: | An elven fortress WIP |
I needed to make a fortress in order to play a siege with my brother. I decided to make one that would fit in with his wood elves, just for fun, so thanks to the advice provided by the members of this community in this thread I am now starting. I've decided to follow aqan's advice about thraduil's hall so the foundation of the piece is a "mountain side." There will be a gate and four towers. There will be a hole into the mountain behind each tower and a sort bridge linking them all. It is meant to work in the same way a normal wall would, hence the steepness of the mountainside (also in part due to the limited amount of thick foam), but look more natural. So without further ado the "mountain side." And the beginnings of the first of four towers. More shingling need to be added and the side passages cut out but the structure is for the most part done. All the structures will be placed slightly below the top to give the impression that the mountain continues upwards. |

Thank you for your comments. I've finished the first of the towers. I've added an elf to show the scale. It is a little big and the bits at the bottom extend a little too far. I'm also not too happy about the tiles at the top but otherwise I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Please let me know what you think Also, does anyone know a good way to make a gate? I'm pretty much clueless so any piece of advice will be greatly appreciated. |

I like the Rivendell inspiration, as it makes it 'Elfy'. |

That's looking good! As to how to make your gate: Well, I've looked through the various articles we have in Constructions Modeling section. I haven't found anything particularly helpful for your case. I think you're best option is probably to take some foamcard & draw out the pattern of what you want the gate to look like; then cut through most of it, but leave one side of the paper intact to serve as a hinge. Be sure to add some tape or something to the side you cut, in order to strengthen the free end & keep the thing from tearing off. Sorry I couldn't find an article to walk you through it. |

It's looking good Dwarf Lord; I think you've handled the curves really well to give it the right Elvish feel. Looking forwards to seeing the development of this project |

Great work Dwarf Lord, the tiles look very nice. It certainly has an Elvish look to it, which seems difficult to capture properly. Great job! |

Thank you for your feedback and help. I've almost finished the second tower, just need to trim the edges, and I've started on the next two. You'll notice that they are a little more "square." That is mainly because the curves on the bottom didn't look right and to make the top of the roof "cap." After trying to place the first tower on the wall I decided a lot needed to changed. First of all the wall fell over, secondly of all the towers was too big for the wall, and thirdly the wall looked too "patched together"and so would have let down the whole piece anyways. So I had to make some radical changes. I was trying to be too economic with the foam even though I had tons left over from my bug collection as well as a friend's. So I decided to make a whole mountain side. I've posted a rough sketch. It is not to scale but it conveys the general idea. Let me know what you think. |

I have now finished all four towers and starting to work on the mountainside. As you can see it is still a little short, lengthwise, but it should work. The tower structure will be added after the rest of the mountain has been carved out. Suggestions as well as ideas of what to add are welcome.[/img] |
