Post subject:  Drum's Terrain/Painting Thread
Well this is definitely one of my more experimental and bigger projects i have to say. I started it a while back now & It's slowly starting to peice together. It's really only a very vague outline of it at the moment but it will come together. Any suggestions or tips would be very helpful for i am no great terrain maker. Still a young teenager so i don't find much time to do it. This is my very first building project and i haven't really planned it out at the start. I'm not known for the planning really so I'm sure i will run into some problems for that. lol I'll give you some of the stages from when i started to now.

The main part of it... but I'm sure you can tell it's Helm's Deep (hopefuly)

This is the next stage which i just couldn't resist to put a splash of paint on it to see what it would look like :D

Another far view of it.. The terrain around it looks shockingly bad. I've just recently joined this site & didn't know anything about how to do it... So i did the kiddies stuff.. Paper mashed it .lol. Any tips please add

Hope you guys like it and wouldn't mind some tips and feed back on it. I've enjoyed making it so far it's just finding the time. Not sure what i shall do for the bricks.. might use cardboard bricks. Terrain i know what to do now and its just detail ill need to sort aswell as the paints.

Well, for your first terrain project there's no dobt this was a bold move!

It's looking great, really. I believe the Deeping Wall was slightly curved, but other than that seems fairly accurate at first sight.

Great work so far... any ideas on how you are going to do the stone effect?

Not really very sure for the brick work. I said i might use cardboard bricks which might work.. What eles could i use tho? I could draw them on with a nail or just a pencil but im not sure how that would turn out. yeah i did kind of take a leep into it for my first project & now i realize how time consuming it is. I had it in the house untill i had it out in the garage for it just seems to grow :wink:

That's some nice work. 8). I'm pretty sure there were a lot more gaps in the battlements in the movie, all though I'll have to watch it again to make sure. Other than that, cool! You'll have something to be proud of when it's finished.

Wow very impressive first project! I'm currently building Helms Deep too however I'm not nearly as far as you yet. I've already planned my brickwork however, I'll be carving into the foam using a biro pen - it works brilliantly! If your foam isn't very thick it maybe worth adding the card bricks or applying a layer of polyfilla and then carving into that once it's semi-dry. Keep up the great work! 8)

thanks for the comments guys. The next stage I'm going to be doing is patching up parts of the mountain & adding part of the mountain onto the second board where the deeping wall is. My plan is to have the stairway built into the mountain like in the film.. but we shall see what i can do :wink:

I am also going to have the mountain able to be removed so that it is easier to store. So the main keep will be separable from the mountain.

Its looking excellent so far, can I just ask is it made from just normal cardboard, or something fancy like plasticard? Good luck with the stairs in the mountain, I tried something like that before and failed miserably! I wish you more success than I had! :)

Well, I am making Minas Tirith and for the brickwork I cut out a large piece of thin card, glue it on the wall and then score the bricks in. It creates a good effect and it is way faster than gluing the little bricks on individually. 8)

It's a quick foto - the wall is only primed by now. With painting it should look much better.
If you're intrested I could write a guide for you but be warned - my method is very very time consuming :o

For the other question I used foam board.. not card. It was just a very thin one that is normaly used for under floors to make less noise.. but i think i found a better use for it. lol

As for my method for doing brickwork...

We need plasticcard (good to use different strengthes, I use 1-3mm), a hammer, a hobby knife, and at least one (big) stone (from your garden e.g.) with a nice surface and patience.

First you cut some stripes of plasticcard from your plastic plate. If you use different strengthes you have in the end bricks that stand out a bit - you can allocate those "big bricks" to have some accentuations and more realism (look the photo in my other post closely and you`ll find some bricks standing out, too)
Now it´s going to be loud...
You have your big stone - I have some of different roughnesses...
You put your plastic stripes on the stone and start hammering (it's loud, boring and time consuming!)
I beginn with a less rough stone as "baseing" and then to "accentuate" some rougher stone - otherwise all my brick surfaces would look almost all the same. You can also create some sorts of lining on your bricks, as it could be created by a mason by drawing slowly your plastic stripe in one direction over an edge (it needs not to be a very sharp one) during hammering. After a time you should have a result like this: /////////////
It's very likely that your plastic stripes are bending to one side - you can bend the plastic the other direction when the plastic is warm. Also you could try to hammer at the "shorter side" of the stripe to bend it the other way.

When you're satisfied with the result it's time for the next step.
(You should clean the plastic of course - the stones are dirty.)

Now you can cut out your bricks with your hobby knife.

The last step is to glue the bricks on the building etc.

And now you have to paint the whole thing. (Look for Dagorlad's very inspiring way to paint his walls etc.)

One way of making textured bricks that I've discovered is to use Windsor & Newton Sand texture Gel. Just paint it onto a sheet of thin card, and then draw up your bricks on the other side. Using a pair of scissors, cut them out and stick then on.
I guess this way of making bricks is fairly similar to Atan's way, just that bit less time consuming (of course, if you're feeling hammer-happy, use Atan's way. I gave it a trial just out of interest and produced some interesting results, including the inihilation of the rock I was working on :shock: ).

Bit of a shame I can't view your pics, Drumtastic (the reason I can't see them is posted on my Helm's Deep topic on TLA).

On a side note, those bricks of yours are very natural looking Atan!
