Post subject: Urukhai Scout Army WIP

Hi all,
as some of you already know, I'm just recently coming back to the hobby; so, although constructive criticism is weclome - no harshness please! :P
Here's the low-down on everything thats happened which is why the fruit of this WIP may be a little sour (in other words - why they may suck) :
I've been a collector/painter/army builder since I was like 6, playing only a single game - stopped the hobby a year or two ago, and have recently come back to it due to my maths/science teacher offering me a place as a senior member of a warhammer club at school which he is trying to organise - creating this army may take a while due to lack of money and coursework etc. but hopefully it'll be worth the look...

Enough about me, though - here's a few models from my original collection, re-mastered:

This guy was from the ballista crew set - i think he was a commander, so as you can see, being skint forces one to (attempt to) be creative! :P
I cut off the top-part of the helmet so it's more like the beserker's rounded helm, stuck on another sword from a metal uruk scout on the underside of what was already there, giving him a darth maul kind of thing, and stuck a battle-damaged shield on his back (I ripped a bit off when forcing it off a fighting-uruk and chopped into it as opposed to flat-out giving up). And the perculiar marking on the shield is my poor attempt at free-handing a scerth (Saruman's original calling card which he used to seal letters - making this a sort of 'special delivery' for the fellowship/free peoples of Middle Earth.

A close-up - the leather and base still need to be done; and any painting tips are very welcome. :)

Thanks for looking.

I've sprayed over the banner and plan on re-painting it.
It was from a Chaos Marauder's set (you can see I'm using what I have in this project!).

The two captains; pre-scerth.
(All bases need to be done.)
I have 7 crossbows spraypainted black that (finger's crossed) you'll be seeing soon, along with 8 beserkers who should also be set to make an appearence in the near future.

Now, you may be thinking 'where's the 'scout' in this?'
Well, as for now, I'm working on my older models, to try and get myself back to grips with the hobby, and also for a wotr army I've been planning containing the heavy-armoured uruks AND the scouts I'm planning on using for SBG.

Thanks for reading - C&C most welcome! :o)

Not bad at all actually. Well, other than the facepaint on the standard Captain...

Still, speaking from experience, Uruks are a very forgiving army, that can look very good with minimal effort. Trust me. Also, it should break you back into painting too, before you start getting into the more challenging models.

The blood stains on the captain's sword are very effective in helping him stand out above the pack.

Well done 8)

Thanks everyone! :D
And gaarew - I forgot to mention I suck at painting the white hand, which may be a bit of a problem for this WIP...

That banner is very nice indeed. Perhaps when painting the white hand, you could try taking a soft rubber/eraser, and carving out a handprint
- such as a simplified version of this:
Image.
Then you can put a thin layer of white paint on it and apply to the model. Simple, quick, easy and accurate handprints.

Hmmm, James, pick up the Two Towers Journey book when you get a chance. Or just drop by GW and leaf through it. There is a guide to painting White Hand symbols.

Just practice, practice, practice. I started off by doing some on the top of a bunch of old base, just to see how they worked. I think it will be something that gets better over time, as I rather like some of the more recent ones I did, and some of the earlier ones are looking a bit off.

Another thing about painting the white hand design is that it doesn't have to be perfect...they are grubby orcs, I'm not thinking that they have a whole lot of artistic abilities breed into them. :)

Dave is spot on there, no need to be 'too' perfect.

thanks for the tips, guys! - duely noted! 8)
I've got some banner cut-out things on the computer. But, unless I stick a smaller one on and paint over everything except the hand itself; they'd be pretty useless in the banner-conversion... And there's certain sense of achievement in free-handing a decent symbol on a figure, I imagine. :P

Love the first captain! The shield on the back and the double Uruk-Hai sword are great! :)

Thanks for the kind words, Ranger Of Gondor! :-D
Coming in as practically a beginner, it means alot coming from all you more experienced lot :) I'll get to work on the banner/un-converted captain ASAP before moving onto the troops!

That's why I said use a soft rubber/eraser - it has a large amount of flex, just like what we see happening when the orcs do the hand prints in the films.

thanks tirno.!
I'll keep that in mind when next I start on the banner/attempt to improve the un-converted captain. :) It'll be the first thing I try before attempting (and probably failing) to try and free-hand it. 8)

Nice stuff; I especially like the "Darth Maul" Captain - just a few horns and some black robes needed!
