@ja33, glad I could help! And thank s for your encouraging words, I appreciate it. I understand that going for an alternate color scheme can be risky, it's just kind of annoying because this is the second time where it seems I didn't get votes simply for doing something different. Again I'm not trying to bash other people's work, they did very well, I'm just being competitive. I put a lot of effort into my work, and it's just disappointing when I don't get the results I expected. Ah well, I guess there's always next time @Ring_of_Gyges, thank you for sharing your thought. I see your point about the gold, I had a similar thought while I was painting it but I actually like how it looks. I'll keep that in mind next time though. As for the gem, it most certainly is unrealistic, but that's the beauty of this hobby. You have the freedom to paint whatever you want regardless of whether it's realistic or not. If I was going for realism I would've left the gem off. But because it was a competition I decided to go for something that would showcase more skill, and enhance the overall look. Anyway, thanks again for sharing, it was helpful. -PoW |

I Really like the blue and yellow actually. Jewels are hit or miss sometimes due to that reality kick, but it is well done. |

Really nice blending on the red cloak, shows how much you've improved. |

Thanks! Glad you guys like the drawing, it was a ton of fun. Apparently Forgeworld knew it was my birthday last week. My family bought me one of the new trolls (the one with the club) for my birthday, and it arrived two days ago. The only problem was that it was the wrong troll! I promptly emailed customer service to see if I could get it replaced, and they replied saying that they are sending me the correct troll, and I get to keep the one they sent me! I'm so excited! Now I wish I didn't spend all that time trying to decide which one to get lol. Thanks Forgeworld! Just curious, has this happened to anyone else? I did a quick google search, and it seems to have happened to a few people, but doesn't seem to happen often. P.S. 800th post -PoW |

Crisp painting and very nice work all around. That's some fine detail work on the captain's shield boss. |

The purple gems go great with the red and gold colors. May I ask how you shaded the red cloaks? Did you use washes? |

Thanks to both of you! @Feanorthenoldor, I'm actually haveing a hard time remembering if I used any washes or not. It's all kind of a blur now. I know I've used Aggrax Earthshade and Leviathan Purple to shade on past Easterlings, but I don't think I did this time. Basically I started with Scorched Brown as a base coat and started mixing in red, leaving the brown in the darkest bits. If I did use any washes, it was more for smoothing out the blending than actual shading. Sorry I can't remember for sure, but I hope that answers your question. -PoW |

I asked because I was curious if you ever used glazes for shading? It's a process that requires a lot of patient, but the result leads to a nice gradual looking shade. |

I will sometimes use them, usually it's to smooth out my blending if it's looking rough, or to add more color. So I guess I don't use them specifically for shading. I may start utilizing it some more in the future though, it does give very nice looking results. I just don't always have the patience for it though -PoW |

I always reckoned we should have seen more of the Easterlings in the LotR films - they look tough and sinister. |

Feanorthenoldor wrote: be interesting to see how this one comes out. Good luck haha. Haha, me too. I've started painting a section of one of the wings, only to find out I have no idea what I'm doing. I wanted to do something like this http://www.coolminiornot.com/95386 But since those are Balrog wings, it's nearly impossible to copy it. So right now I'm messing around with it. Here's what I have so far. It's not a good picture, but you can kind of see where I'm going with it. The glossy bit is some wash that's still drying. Kind of a boring update, but that's all I got for now. I'll try and get some more done this week now that school's over. -PoW |
