Good progress Josh, though I've just noticed you've slipped a little with the red paint on the banner (in the centre of the icon) - you may just want to touch up those areas with some black paint, it looks great otherwise! 8)

On the subject of the banner would mind explaining how you painted the black banner cloth?

Drat, I thought I'd already touched that up!

The black was relatively easy to paint. I started with a highlighting the cloth with an even mixture of Codex Grey and Chaos Blacks. A second highlight was then applied with a mixture of Codex Grey and Chaos Black again, this time in a 3:1 ratio. Lastly for the highlights I applied a very watered down highlight of pure Codex Grey on the sharpest edges. I then used a few glazes of Badab Black to further blend the highlights together and keep the banner looking black, instead of grey. Hope that helps. :)

Just so you guys know, I'll be taking a break from my Morannon's to work on my Ent. Hopefully he turns out well. :)

Glad to help Michael! As soon as I'm finished with my Ent, which should be in about a week or so, I'll go back to painting the Morannon Orc Commanders and some of te plastic Morannons as well. I'm getting sick of painting dull wood, so should be a refreshing change!

Hey all. I thought I'd post the rest of my WIP pictures on the Ent here, so as not to further hog the Ent thread.

To be honest, I'm really getting frustrated with this model. I wasn't happy with the old scheme at all, and now that I've tried painting the Silver Birch scheme I'm not very happy with it either. I think I'll end up using colors similar to my first attempt, but drybrush it on in a more traditional manner. This model just doesn't like me, I think. :-X

Any thoughts on him?

He looks good Josh, very much like a Silver Birch:

I think it is always going to be hard to make the Ent look impressive with just the paint job, I think adding character to the Ent by adding brightly coloured fungi or something could be an idea:

Not so bright but hopefully you get the idea.

Keep up the good work,
Andrew

You ent looks nice. But it looks a bit like stone. What your ent needs is some warm colours in it to contrast with the cool colours and to make it look more like a tree.

I really do like what you've done, but trees do have a variety of colours in them that are warm and cool.

What I think you should do (and I think you mentioned it yourself or something) is paint it a nice brown first and then working a warm grey over the top. To make it a bit warmer, add a tiny bit of a yellowy of flesh tone to the grey.

Stippling it over certain parts will help the underneath colours show through a bit.

I'm not sure if you really want my advice but I thought I'd just post my thoughts down in case you want it.

Keep it up! 8)

he looks very good especially the legs but samoth is right.
normal silver birches also have brown in the cracks of the treebark.
so, perhaps painting the cracks with scorched brown and a highlight might be an idea.
And is it just me or did you paint the leaves in a really light colour?

keep us updated, 8)

Thanks for all of the comments and help guys. It's much appreaciated. I think I'm going to take a break from my Ent and go back and finish my Morannon Orc commanders. Oh, how I wish I'd have purchased Dave's Willow Tree Giant!

I'd only painted the bark, the leaves are just white because it would've been difficult to avoid drybrushing them when I was painting the bark, same goes for the fungi. I was going to touch those areas up later.

Don't worry Josh, sometimes it's good to give it a break for a few days and come back with some new ideas and enthusiasm.

I think that part of the problem is that you're painting the GW plastic ent, they don't seem to have a lot of character. I think the main focus of an ent is it's pose and face, the colour schemes are all going to be similar anyways. :) And for the record I thought that both the last paint scheme and this one are fine, just like I said it lacks a bit of 'zing' that could be made up by a bit of character.

Just my 2 cents. :-D

Thanks Andrew, exactly what I was thinking.

The main problem I have with this model, is that it is next to impossible to get it to look great. It's super easy to get it to look good with a quick drybrush, but when you try to enhance that look with aditional colors and washes it screwes it up.

Nice work on the Ent Josh! 8) Once you've added a bit more shading to the recesses and some other colours on the fungi and leaves, he should look pretty good!

Anyway looking forward to seeing more work on the Morannon Orcs. :)
