the trees are a very nice addition, they do a lot to the "creepy" looks

How about using some string with cocktail sticks cut to size and pushed through. That would help create the different variation in size of thorns. As you would be using string you could create a more fluent feel to the root, yet keeping the randomness that would fit in with the look you want.

The string is also a good idea. A lot of people are beginning to think about Mirkwood trees and ruins. This would be a good place to work out some ideas.

I have been experimenting with Woodland scenic small tree armatures for roots and more detailed Mirkwood trees. The small trees can be twisted into vines and roots. They might look better cut into smaller parts. I also used a GW tree part as a root. I will adjust them with hot water and clippers.

I drill a hole to match the pin in the Woodland Scenic armature.

My brother suggested a stair down on the back side. I think he is right. I will have to make a wider base and try it

Another great looking assemblage of varied components and creations.
While poking around, I found this artificial coral that might be useful for creepy vines - it could be cut into smaller pieces.

Brilliant Charlie.
I know you have done things on bigger scales but i am really enjoying the small scale of this. It will be joy to watch unfold.
I know you make your pieces to play on but this has the feel of a diorama.

Thanks

I mentioned some time back the spacer I use so that miniatures fit the stairs. I built one to include in the next custom mold.

I wanted my brick work to be right so I built up the stairs as I set out the floor. I will try to fill the gaps with dry wall filler tomorrow. It should be dry enough to drill the holes for the iron spikes too

I added the small triangle, the half round part and the stair to my Moria column custom mold. I still need to cast the mold 17 times more for what I have planed for Moria. The extra parts are beginning to pay off.

Image

I decided to use mold 200, rear of photo, and half columns and 8"X 2" hard would bases while I was stacking this section. The Moria dungeon will go together quickly when I have the blocks cast.

Your updates put us ordinary mortals to shame.
I must add - the statues from the Ruins of Osgiliath set are among the nicest background items GW have ever produced. The more I see them, the more I like them.

The top picture has a staircase above the entrance. It has stairs both sides that meet in the middle.
Is there a further plan for this staircase as it seems a staircase to nowhere ?

Will the thick plastic bend with hot water?

Love the tree roots so far, they work well

It can be a bridge or base for an additional stair up. There seems to be a number of Stairways to nowhere in the drawings 8) I will make some where for it to go

Image

Most of my elevated walk ways are two inches wide. I will need to make more one inch wide walk ways.

Image

I made these for Goblin Town before I learned the catwalks were mostly wood. If I add trees they will work for Mirkwood

They should but I have a heat gun if they won't

Thanks guys.
Suggestions are very welcome.

A Fire of some kind is a great idea.

How about something like this. It may be too intricate but it gives the idea.

I have been following your thread since before I joined and it is absolutely amazing! You have such a talent for modelling and I find your attention to detail and the meticulous way in which you go about your projects so inspiring!

Dol Guldur looks great so far and I can't wait to see it finished. I really like your use of the statues around the structure and especially like the hooded statues. I also really like the tone you get when you paint rocky/stone surfaces. Do you use Woodland Scenics for your terrain painting? What steps do you use to paint stone walls? I have always struggled in getting the correct tone on large-scale terrain pieces. I often mix very cheap acrylic which does work but then I can't replicate that shade of brown or grey, for example, on my next board which is meant to slot in beside the first one.

Thanks and great work! :)

Thanks.
I use Woodland Scenic pigments for washes. Over black I use dark warm gray then a medium warm gray. I dry brush it with a cold gray then a warm ivory. I use craft paints.Craft smart dark gray and medium gray. The cold grays are Dove gray and or slate gray all by Plaid. I like Delta Ivory because it is opaque. I use two to four inch wide flat brushes to paint terrain.

Thanks for that. I'll keep that in mind on my next piece.
