Something like this?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009OANG0I?psc=1
Or get a large sheet of coloured card in any art supplies store. Or look in discount bedding/curtain sellers - lots of fabrics in many shades and textures that might be usable.

Thanks guys.
Dorth, I was thinking of something with a mottled background like this: http://www.coolminiornot.com/328528?browseid=9145973

Annnnyway, the painting continues, and the scenery making is still on hold.

I am still on Isengard.

So my Berserkers and Ferals were looking a bit bare based, so I've added some scattered rags (tissue paper and PVA), shattered weapons and shields, etc. Since this photo I've made more progress:

Image

1. I finished the 12 berserkers. Over the weekend I added some white hands and spatters of blood. I don't like too much blood on minis, but the berserkers really are begging for it.

2. I need to finish the Ferals. 4 need skin work. All need work on the metal, and all need a few washes on the cloth. Interestingly, since I do really like the models, I don't particularly like painting them.

3. Warg Riders- I'll be painting six of these this week.

4. Sharkey and Worm (crimebusters of the sea!). It took me a while to get hold of Worm, but now I have, and am eager to get them out on the table!

5. 12 Uruk scouts with shields. These I painted this weekend, but all i have is a WIP shot:

Image

6. I also converted a spare Ugluk to a standard bearer (standing on a future stone circle!).

Image

7. Waiting on Mahur to arrive, to lead the scouts. I shall paint him and Ugluk/standard bearer together.

So more or less, this is my Throne of Skulls army.

Image

I want to get every single model up to the best standard I can manage before the competition. Considering I was rushing through them to get them done for the last two tournaments they'll never be contenders for best army, but once they're done I can take a break with scenery for a bit, and then on to Galadhrim elves. Or maybe my Blue Mountains Dwarf project... or maybe... gah! So many projects!

They got put on hold for the sudden flurry of painting for tournaments- I'm quite eager to get back to them. The first mould didn't work out too well, I got a reasonable cast out of it, but requiring some work with a hobby knife to remove air bubbles etc.
In the end, the thing I was most worried about- the silicone sticking in all the gaps, didn't happen at all. The bigger issue was getting the silicone IN all those gaps! Next time I shall brush it on first, and then pour. However, it had been some time since I had used the stuff, and I think I got the proportions wrong, as it started to cure very quickly, and I didn't get enough fluidity to begin with.

After Throne of Skulls I shall give it another go, the houses too, make the stone circle and possibly a drystone broch.

A few promised photos:

The finished scouts (well, I haven't decided if i'll white hand them or not- i quite like them without).
Image

And the almost finished berserkers- they need the battlefield detritus on their bases painted, but are otherwise pretty much there:
Image
Too much blood? Not enough white hands? Any suggestions/feedback?

And lastly, I started work on a scout drummer last night:
Image
The arm needs some definition and I'll make a skin for the top of the drum and swap the sword for a drumstick.
In all honesty I did this absent mindedly last night with a fingernail and blob of greenstuff while watching a film, so am surprised it's come out as well as it has.

Liking the vividness of the berserkers. The drummer looks a nice conversion, will you be changing his sword for a drumstick ?

Love the flesh tone you've achieved on the Orcs.

Thanks guys. I'm getting happy with them! It really is a lot easier to just paint to the quality you want right off the bat, but as I've been playing so many tournaments recently I really wanted at least one decent 500 point list that was painted and ready to go. So I got them to "acceptable" and have been fiddling ever since, as you can see.

Now I'm pretty much at that point with 1000 points of isengard, which means I can play and paint at leisure!

Gandlaf: Yes certainly, the sword is coming off and a bone/drumstick will take its place. I'll also be making a skin for the drum, probably from Procreate, which is a bit easier to handle when very thin than greenstuff, which is so elastic it makes it hard to cut.

I made a start on the Warg Riders last night, but still waiting on Mauhur to be delivered before I paint him. Still, I'm pretty much on schedule I think.

If it was me, I'd save the White Hand markings for Captains, Banner bearers, drummers - to make them stand out more (and because it's not exactly easy to paint it on). I really like the painting of the metal Scouts with shields (did one of them decapitate a guy with his shield, like Lurtz tried in the film?), they look awesome!

You could put White Hands on all of them but thin the paint on the rank and file troops so it is less apparent but go the Full Monty on the heroes/leaders.
