In my experience, starting auctions with a high starting bid or with a buy it now gets you absolutely nowhere. My Morannon Orc Commanders from last May are an example - the first auction I started bidding at 35 pounds, and got not one bid. Then I started it at fifteen pounds and ended up getting around 40 if I remember correctly.

Recently, my Sons of Orar Shrike sold for 50 pounds or thereabouts. I started the bidding at ten. If people want them they'll pay, starting auction bids high will only hinder you.

And to be honest I'm surprised they sold for that as they aren't even based - yet they sold for nearly double RRP. Basing is really important as far as these auctions go, but use sand, because as you pointed out, some people don't like rocky bases. Good luck with any future auctions. :)

Yes, but there's a thin line between 'high' and 'too high'. If it crosses that line it won't get one bid.

Thanks for the advice, DarkWind :-D

Looks like next on my list is some form of sand, possibly fine talus. :) I dug around a bit and found I already have some static grass and shrubbery.

I'm going to be getting mostly metal minis in my next order, so I'll try with a low starting price. 8)

All right, what do ya'll think of this base:

I'm not sure exactly what it's supposed to be set in, I just kind of drybrushed whatever colors appealed to me on the gravel. Maybe it's a riverbank. :?

btw, that gray stuff visible on the left side is just powder..I forgot to dust it off before taking the pic, and then my camera flashed its low power light, so I wasn't taking any chances on taking another picture.

C&C welcome

Looking cool but maybe you should blend the rock in the sand that gives a better look to it, don't know why but thats why people buy it.

You mean paint the rock the same color as the sand, or put them in the blender together? :?

hmmm could also work but don't forget to get the figure of the base :-D
But I mean that you must give it the look that it is digged in the surface. You only see an half of the rock of example not that it's just glued on top if it.

Sorry if this sounds a bit weird English is not that good of me.

Yeah, the rock looks very much as though it was just stuck straight on top of the sand layer (which I suppose it was) and in future your bases would benefit tremendously from a little sand put on around the base of the rock after you attatch it, it'll look a lot more natural that way.

If possible, the best method is to stick the rock straight onto the plastic before you add the sand, so the sand settles around it and makes it look like part of the ground.

Thanks for the advice, Raukov and Hero of Gondor :)

I actually did stick it down on top after I put on the sand layer and, looking at it again, I see that you both are right, it kind of looks unrealistic...I'll try and make a new one this afternoon, trying what Raukov suggested.

Thanks! I'm pretty pleased with it myself, hopefully the next one will be even better. 8)

On another note, I just placed an order for the Fellowship of the Ring boxed set and Ambush at Amon-Hen, so expect some WIP shots in about a week! :-D And these will be to the best of my ability, not speed-painting like the orcs. :)

Many apologies for the dark picture, it was taken about 5 minutes ago and it is already dark here....... :x

Do ya'll think it is an improvement? :?

Looking good, Josh. I'm not sure I like the grey though, looks a little like Moria. Other then that it looks good. 8)

Thanks, LL. I'm planning on doing another one or two of these and submitting them all together to see which one ya'll like best. Looking at the base again, I can see what you mean about Moria.... Expect some updates tomorrow on the other bases! :-D

Mostly for tests. If I decide I like 'em enough, though, I'll chop the metal thingies off the bottom of the Fellowship set I just ordered and use these as their bases. 8) I'm glad you like 'em.

Thanks. I think it's an improvement myself. Though I'm going to upload 1 more variant base, and see which kind ya'll think is better. 8)

Unfortunately, the person I buy from doesn't have any Galadhrim. I might get some wood elves, though, because in my experience Elves and Mordor sell best. 8)

Is it the Breaking of the Fellowship or the other one?

Fellowship of the Ring. I would have gotten BOTF, but they don't have it. :(

Cool, will you sell them individually?
