Hi,

some pictures of my Theoden's Guard I finished today (took quite a while). I started painting middle of last year, so I know that I have lots of stuff to learn, but of course any critic is welcome.

My plan is a huge Rohan WOTR army. I will show more of this army here; I start now with Warriors of the Westfold, that will take a lot of time as well.

Nice collection of Royal Guard. The freehand horse on Gamling's banner is outstanding too, very difficult to do that well 8)

Excellent! They look great in large numbers like that. I like the gold trim on the cloth under the saddles!

Thx for the comments. Yes, the freehand was not easy. I did the freehand on the frontside first, it's ok but I'm not completly happy with it (tried some corrections, but would need to do it completly new to be fully happy, too lazy for this challenge at the moment). The other one went quite fine in my opinion (both are copies of the GW banner). I will do some closeup pictures, but not before end of next week. I expect that they will show more flaws, as always when I do real closeups. But I'm quite happy with the look on the table and moreover with the completion of my first real painting project. I think I do the rohan commander (foot) now.

So cool ! I really like the big block of them, seems appropriately epic. I wouldn't stress about close up shots, 99% of the time you'll see them from a distance and they look great!

I started my rohan commander now, as the forum is called WIP, some WIP pictures, just done the face (but that's the hardest part for me).

Looks amazing.
One point of critique, to bad all the horses have the same colours.

Well, that was fully intentional. I wanted a quite uniform look for Theoden's guard and I wanted grey horses as the only hint about rohan horses in the book points to grey.

But sure, that's a matter of taste. I will mix more with the riders of rohan, right now I have only 6 of them painted with different coulours.

I agree, it does look more uniform.
They look really good, but to monotone for me.
As you said it's a matter of taste.

Love you commander by the way, and the face does look good.

how about making small differences by black , white or grey spots on some horses? Don't have to be alot , few might do.

Good idea, but hard to do right. I may try this on a clean horse.

Update on the commander, only the base is missing:
