Hi,
Since I have quite a lot of Osgiliath ruins (4 self-made pieces and 2 boxes of GW ruins), I thought I'd make a terrain board that's more Osgiliath-ish than my regular grassy terrain board. I quickly drew this design:

I am quite pleased with the design, but I don't know what to do with the empty areas next to the roads. Should I just paint them in a stony colour? I thought about tiling it, but then the road won't stand out. What should I do with it? Any suggestions would be welcome!

A mixture of broken walls, spots of withered grass, heaps of rubbish, a pit or two, (broken) planks and beams scattered around...?

I wouldn't put a river in the middle, since that way ANY game you play on the board will be dominated by fighting over the bridge crossing. You do have another board, so this may not be so much of an issue, but it's still worth considering. And for the blank areas, I would just do them in a dark brown to look like dark soil. Keep it simple approach.

Oooo an Osgiliath board - my favourite! Well for a start buildings / ruins is probably the best option. I've in fact just finished creating an article on the Tomes of Wisdom on making an Osgiliath building which you could use - or try Ninja's ruins. 8)

I have looked through that and it is great. Once I get my WoMT painting I would like to try to start on a Osgiliath board!! I have a 4x8 piece of plywood that I will be using (I hope it won't be to big!)

Thanks for the suggestions! That article is great!

Hm, I do like the river, since it brings a little variety into an otherwise pretty plain board, but you are right. I might make another board without a river.

Okay, I think I'll paint it in a dark, stone-like colour to make it look like a city, and I suppose I'll add things like withered grass and other small details. I will keep the surface flat, otherwise I can't put my Osgiliath buildings on the board. I prefer not to attach the buildings to the board, because I want to be able to change the setup of the board.

Don't make another board, make a plug! Cut a long brick of foam or something that inserts perfectly into where the river is, to make it open ground.
Detail and paint the top side of it to make it look like open ground or cobblestone or something.

With a removable plug, you could choose to play either with or without the river, making your table far more versatile.

What about this?

I will use wooden sticks as plugs to put the river piece between the two halves of the board. The bridge is loose, and it can be placed over the river.

Another option could be to make some balsa wood boats and allow ferry crossings the whole way along the river. You could also add a pier at either side of the bridge with some steps cut into the board that go down to it.

Or you could make the board modular with it being divided into 2 pieces along the middle of the river. Then if you dont want the river in the middle put the two halves side to side so you have the river running along the edge of the board, but you'd need a removable bridge in all cases! Good luck!:)

awesome idea (I still have to make an osgiliath board myself)
but for the empty spaces I would make it just 4 or 5 millimeters
higher than the road just like on the womt box but just ruind.
and also add bushes and rubble of all kinds.
also that idea for the plugs and removable bridge is awesome.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions!
I'll start building the board as soon as I have the time. Unfortunately, I'm a little busy right now, but I'll post my progress when I start building it.
