As most of you know, I organize LOTR events in Budapest.

In the next game we are going to apply the warband and the hobbit rules.

So the question is, how many points are ideal for a great game. What is a great game for me? Well, it had to be interesting, but not to long. The ideal is less then 3 hours for us.

So how many points are ideal? 700? 900?

Probably this is not the first question for this, but are you satisfied with the Hobbit SBG rules? A few of us read the rules, but they did not really like it. I'm sure we will try it soon. What are the good and bad parts of the new rule system?

We are going to make a quick reference sheet for the hobbit SBG game, cause it is hard to keep in mind all the small rules. Does anyone ever made a quick ref. sheet here? It would be a lot easier to translate from that, rather than made one by ourself.

500 points can usually be done in a couple of hours, 700 certainly in less than 3. 500-700 tends to be a good size army to use in my opinion.

Oh, one more question, what is the ideal board size? We used today 6x4, but it was way too huge and slow. We used the Hold Ground scenario, cause the picture show us a huge board, but it did not work really well.

I too like the 500-750 range. Although some small 350's can be quite chaotic and fun if you take a monster in them as I did with the Watcher recently.

As for board size 4 feet square works great for under 750. After that it's a bit too crowded so 6x4 works well

More about ideal point sizes can found on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=24179&p=295065&hilit=500+points+best+size#p295065

700-1000 seems to be the most fair. Nothing particularly wrong with other sizes though.

More about the new rules can be found by watching the “What’s changed?” video series on the GBHL channel:

Overall: Changes are good (Highlights: Brutal monster attacks are a wonderful new addition, much debate over shooting…)

I’m not sure what you mean by reference sheets. If you’re looking for a sheet with all the different charts I’d recommend picking up the EFGT play sheet on Ebay. If you’re talking about hero cards, most people make their own.

Lastly, in my opinion, 4x4 boards are ideal for SBG (depending on point sizes). :)

40pts 3x3 or 4x4 table and 1 hour 30
500pts 4x4 and 1 hour 30
600-800pts 4x4 or 4x6 and 2 hours
1000pts 4x6 and 2hours 30

The sweet spots in my opinion

I've always played 300, 500, and 750 at the maximum and had fantastic battles. I found the game becomes an absolute slog when each side has more than 50 models on the table but that may just be a personal thing. 500 is a fantastic medium however, and 300 is still quite enjoyable.
