Mithril Miniatures had a 20% off sale on their Classic range last week, so I ordered some minis I'd had my eye on for a while. I decided to use a couple of the Gandalf minis as the Blue Wizards, and others as their companions - an alternative Fellowship of my own!

I have imagined Alatar as the more offensive wizard, and Pallando as the more defensive/restorative wizard. I've based this off Alatar being Morinehtar "Darkness-slayer" and Pallando as Rómestámo "East-helper". I also had in mind (all my own made-up fluff) that Alatar would eventually fall to evil, so his name was actually given (prophetically by Malbeth's descendant - I'll get to him later) to say "The Darkness, Slayer" which is altogether different from a slayer of darkness!
So without further ado, here are the profiles. Please give C&C!

Edited version

Alatar / Morinehtar (Wizard) - 160pts

Mv F S D A W C M / W / F
6” 5/4+ 4 5 1 3 7 3 / 6* / 3

Sorcerous Blast 12” 5+
Terrifying Aura self 2+
Aura of Command 6" radius 5+
Banishment 12" 5+

Wargear
Staff of Power (two-handed staff)

Fundahâdh (Thunder-cleaver). Fundahâdh is a sword. When Alatar fights with Fundahâdh (instead of his staff), he adds +1 to his Strength characteristic giving him a Strength of 5.

Special Rules
*Staff of Power. Alatar may expend a single Will point each turn without reducing his own will store.

Lord of Forests. Alatar and Pallando are Maiar of Oromë, the Lord of Forests. As such, they may move through woodland terrain without penalty.

Pallando / Rómestámo (Wizard) - 170pts

Mv F S D A W C M / W / F
6” 5/4+ 4 5 1 3 7 3 / 6* / 3

Lord of Forests. Alatar and Pallando are Maia of Oromë, the Lord of Forests. As such, they may move through woodland terrain without penalty.

†Focussed Power. Pallando has a uniquely controlled mind, and as such can focus his powers to increase their effectiveness. When channelling, roll a D6. On a 5+, the channelling is free.

Personally I would go for
Allatar:
-imobilise
-command
-terrifying aura
-sorcerous blast
-aura of command
-banishment

Pallando:
-Imobilise
-renew
-terrifying aura
-strengthen will
-fortify spirit
-natures wrath
when channelling spells roll a d6 5+ and the action was free

150points a pop me thinks, i will give it some playtesting

EDIT: I forgot to say get rid of the extra spell range

Can you point me in the direction to an explanation of fortify spirit and banishment? Never heard of them.

Made my own thread about this not long ago over on TLA. Maybe i should move it here as there isn't much interest.... So those would be my balance opinions also but points wise i guess just 150 is ok.

I'd say the first could be 150 but 160 would be more fair, you basically combined the best of Radagast and Gandalf. The second needs to be more in the 170-180 range with renew, fortify spirit, and his spell range.

Fortify spirit and banishment are new spells in the hobbit rulebook.

Thanks for the ideas!

@Grungehog: I'd forgotten about the new channeling rules, perhaps that is better than the increased range! Banishment is probably more suited to my idea of Alatar as the offensive. Thanks for the input.

So shall we say 155pts (in between suggestions!) for Alatar and 170pts for Pallando?

The figures arrived today by the way, and they are really lovely sculpts! Ever so slightly taller than GW but really negligible.
The names and races of the Companions I have devised are as follows:
- Gamal Goathelm, Ironfist Dwarf Lord (Using Thorin in Wargear mini, who has ram horns on his helmet! Gamal is the original Norse version of my own surname, and alliteration is always nice!)
- Frár, Ironfist Dwarf (name comes from another Tolkien Dwarf)
- Fraín son of Frár, Ironfist Dwarf (changed the beginning of Dain or Nain to keep the family connection)
- Malhir, Dunedain (descendant of Malbeth the Seer, name means grandson of Mal(beth) if my Elvish is correct)
- Radulf, Easterling hermit (giant of a man, using Beorn mini, who left his tribe in disgust at their barbaric practices and Sauron-worship. Name means Red Wolf in Norse I think. He changed from his birth name Ulfdar to show his separation.)
- Erurainon, Lothlorien Elf (my own name in Elvish, and my username!)

I'll hopefully have their profiles up soon for critique :)

If you wanted to keep their points from getting out of control, you could always make certain spells harder to cast.
Or failing that just go for 160 Allatar 170 pallando
Special rule for both
Waylaid: when making a fate test (A or P respectively) must re-roll the score of 6, the second roll counting.

Do you mean to use 160 and 170 with the Waylaid rule (which is a very interesting idea, thanks :) )

also Which army list should they be added to? wanderers in the wild, white council, or radagasts alliance

Post subject:  Re: House Profiles: Company of the Ithryn Luin

I'd say Wanderers in the Wild list, because thats exactly what they are doing lol

Yes, they aren't in the White Council, and because they go off to the east, they wouldn't be with Radagast.

Post subject:  Re: House Profiles: Company of the Ithryn Luin

I think they should be independent characters, and should have a special warband rule so they always deploy together

Post subject:  Re: House Profiles: Company of the Ithryn Luin

That's a good idea, Grungehog.

I've edited the original post, so I've added points and changed some of the spells. I'll hopefully get to try them out this afternoon.

Here are my proposed profiles for three Dwarf companions:

Gamal Goathelm (Dwarf) - 135pts

Mv F S D A W C M / W / F
5” 6/4+ 4 8 3 3 6 3 / 3 / 3

Wargear
Dwarf heavy armour, Klofjótlig, Brustyr.

Klofjótlig (Split-speedily). Klofjótlig is a two-handed axe with a blade of mithril, most rare in the East of Middle-earth. Gamal does not suffer the -1 penalty to the Duel roll for fighting with a two-handed weapon. Additionally, he may choose to re-roll one his D6 for winning the Duel, but he must do so before the other player rolls their dice.

Brustyr (Goat-helm). The Horned Helmet is a famed sight feared by the enemies of the Ironfist Dwarves. Enemy models within 6” of Gamal with Courage 5 or lower have their Courage reduced by one.

Frár (Dwarf) - 75pts

Mv F S D A W C M / W / F
5” 5/4+ 4 6 2 2 6 2 / 2 / 2

Wargear
Dwarf armour, axe, dagger.

Special Rules
Healing herbs. In the Move phase, instead of moving, Frár may attempt to heal a friend in base contact. Roll a D6. On a 1-3 there is no effect. On a score of 4 or 5, the model regains a wound lost previously in the game. On a 6, the model regains all its lost wounds.

Fraín, son of Frár (Dwarf) - 55pts

Mv F S D A W C M / W / F
5” 5/4+ 4 6 2 2 5 2 / 1 / 1

Wargear
Dwarf armour, two-handed axe.

Special Rules
Young and eager. Fraín is a feisty young dwarf. He may call one Heroic Combat per game without having to spend a might point.

Thoughts on these fellows? :)

Those seem quite good
although I personally think gamal should cost more points perhaps along the 135/140 line

the other 2 profiles are very good , Frar could be 75-80 points though

Ok, thanks, I'll change that!

Post subject:  Re: House Profiles: Company of the Ithryn Luin

I think the profiles are ok. Could bump Frain up 5 more points as a heroic combat per turn I would imagine to be worth a good 10-15 pts as a minimum. You are pretty much guaranteed 3 rounds of combat per game so don't think this is too excessive at all. Narsil on the Isildur profile in ORB is 55 pts and has the same effect. Take off a few points for him not being an A3/W3/M3 hero and you are still looking at a good 30-40 pts for that rule realistically. My opinion is that GW put too high a price on these kind of things which limits the game, so I would be ok with only a small increase.
Given that he can only have D6, there is no point in putting the cost up too much more, which I can see you have taken into account.

Post subject:  Re: House Profiles: Company of the Ithryn Luin

I actually said one Heroic combat per game free, not per turn :) Do you think it's reasonable? Thanks for the input!

Author:  Hodush [ Wed Jul 17, 2013 12:49 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: House Profiles: Company of the Ithryn Luin

haha woops! reasonable enough then. now we both know how much heroic combat per turn is roughly....
