As much as the Dweller in the Dark is pretty un-Tolkien, it makes me want to collect a force of monstrous creatures to counterbalance my elf collection.

I was wondering how viable it would be to have, say, the Dweller and a load of trolls, and maybe the Balrog, in once force.

Yeah, I'm not sure how tactically sound it'd be, but I'd rather it be fun to paint and fun to play with, as I won't be gaming very often.

I would say it would definitely be a fun force to play, but EVERY army would seriously outnumber you. They would just feed the Balrog a mini a turn while they butcher your trolls. Maybe a dragon (you need might for heroic moves) would be viable. As for the Tolkien-ness of the Dweller, I would say it's about as likley to be canon as Gulavhar.

I wouldn't limit yourself to just trolls and dwellers. I don't recommend the balrog at all, a dragon or even a cave drake is more effective. Also you always have the beast option: druzhag, warg chiefs, and the spider queen are all pretty great and provide much needed mobility. Make sure you have atleast one proper magic caster, undying is nice but a Wyrmtongue dragon could work aswell and still kill tonnes. Here's what I use:
Undying on armoured horsey
Saruman on horsey
Grima
Morrow troll chief
3 spider queens
Cave drake

Well, I personally am a big sucker for themed armies, so I immediately say: go for it! Seriously, do it!

I'd love to see sth like this.

Though I will agree with the rest on the dragon. The Balrog, even though having an awesome mini, is just not that great. By taking a dragon, you still stick to the 'Monsters In the Deeps of Moria' theme, you gain some good viable tactical options & you save up pts for some more beasties.

In 700pts you can get 1 Wyrmtongue Dragon, 4 Trolls & 1 Dweller

How is Gulhavar of Arnor? He's a pretty cool model too and if he's playable I might ally him in.

Moria has loads of potential for themed armies. Take a few (or many) Goblins to start with, then add........

1) Balin's Tomb: Lots of Goblins, a Drum and Cave Trolls.

2) Bat-Winged Horrors: Dwellers, Bat Swarms and Druzhag.

3) Warg Attack: Wild Wargs, Wild Warg Cheiftains, Warg Marauders and Gundabad Blackshields.

4) Spiderman: Ashrak, Giant Spiders and Spider Queens.

5) Crazy Shamans: Groblog, Shamans and loads of Goblins.

6) Durburz's Iron Fist: Durburz and loads of Prowlers.

Gulhavar is great, but soft against arrows. I've played with him a few times and he wreaks appropriate havoc. He's best against warriors, easier to feed and recharge that way. But because he's a bit vulnerable to missile fire I like to pair him up with a bat swarm...makes for a good screen with lots of wounds, and if you do run across, say, Glorfindel, it's not a problem.

For a monster army I would alway recommend a Ringwraith; the -1 Courage penalty combined with Terror really helps you select your fights.

A dragon and the Balrog also have the -1 courage, and the Dragon is much more thematic.

All troll armies are not very good. Sure when you win fights you'll kill 2-3models each combat, but trolls are no match for elves(you said it was to counter your other force, so I'm going to assume you'll be fighting elves). They can kill a decent amount of soldiers, but are no match for elven heroes.
I have played troll armies multiple times and usually most get tied down by one warrior (gotgc are awsome at this)each turn because of the high courage, while the heroes kill one or two a turn with spear/pike support.
Plus if they are cave trolls most of your heroes will have a tied or higher fight value with them.
Use the dweller to kill as many soldiers as possible, maybe take some goblins to delay heroes, or wargs if you want to keep the monster theme.
Watch heroic combats though.
Balrogs are easy to kill with all the heroes you can get for its cost(rumil,Gil-galad,glorfindel)
Never fought dragons before.
