One of the benefits of fighting behind a barrier is you get to fight 1 v 1, even if outnumbered. Assuming you're dealing with normal warriors with 1 attack, and it's 3 v 1, in effect the defender gets to roll 3 dice. On an open field it would be 3 dice to 1 die, which changes the odds significantly.
