A greenhorn here with a newie question.

Bought a batch of SBG stuff last week. I now have all three of what I think are the boxed set rulebooks. Not the Journeybooks. I'm not particularly interested in the hobbit just yet and couldn't afford it anyway.

So my question is this. Obviously I'm set if I just want to play with my friends, but if I happen to be able to find a game at the FLGS or GW store, would I need a more current rulebook to be able to play LoTR?

Thanks!

Your newest rulebook, the Return of the King (2003) is two editions behind the current rules and there have been lots of changes between it and the current (Hobbit) rules. The rules are still fundamentally the same but the details have changed a lot.

Thanks,
Since I posted this, I've been reading up around here and it looks like there are quite a few things added to the hobbit. However, since I won't be going to the Hobbit, what has changed between RoTK and the "BRB"?

Personally, I would buy a copy of the big blue lotr sbg book and call it good.

There is a link to a copy of the book. It contains all the rules you need in addition to profiles and hobby tips. I bought the book about 3 years ago and have never regretted it.

You do realise that the Hobbit rulebook is the same game? It's just version 5 of the rules. IMO there are lots of improvements to the system between the 4th and 5th editions. Also you're in a good area for LOTR so I'd recommend picking up the small Hobbit rulebook if you can

Hey Folks,
Thanks for the links and advice. $75-85 is just about double what I'm willing to pay for a rulebook these days. I've been spoiled by games like Song of Blades and Kings of War. Still, I'll keep my eyes open for bargains online and at the FLGS auctions. It would be a nice book to have.

In the meantime, can anyone elaborate the differences between RoTK box book and the BRB? My understanding is that they are fewer than between BRB and Hobbit, but I'd like to understand more.

The changes in the hobbit rulebook are not minor changes.
Lots have changed and most are better now.
I would certainly go for the new rules.
The best and cheapest options I see for you are:
-Buy the small hobbit rulebook on ebay (20-30$ probably)
-buy the box escape from goblin town (120$???)
The second one is actually really great value. Lots of miniatures for a decent price.
Depends if you want to spend that amount of money or not ;)

The changes to the rules are alright, but having played both, I prefer 4th ed rules. I think the new rules are victim to power creep but that opinion in widely unpopular.

Well, I just scored a pretty good deal and picked up the Escape from Goblins town boxed set (minus half the goblins and 4 other characters).

Now that I will have the mini-rulebook, can anyone let me know what the differences is between the mini-rulebook and the big Hobbit rulebook?

Just the profiles, the scenarios and the hobby section, but the profiles are on a pdf on the black library somewhere.

Thanks,
Just grabbed that document. Between that, and the other rulebooks I've found (Fellowship, 2 towers, RoTK, etc) I have most profiles. Where can I get profiles for regular hobbits?

The free people's sourcebook or the old scouring of the shire sourcebook.

Hey. Many of the old profiles have been updated since the original rulebooks came out. They are now split into -

5 LOTR sourcebooks, Free peoples, Mordor, Moria & Angmar, Kingdoms of Men and Fallen Realms.

2 Hobbit books (so far) - Hardback rulebook and Desolation of Smaug supplement.

3 LOTR 'Journey' books. These have scenarios from the 3 films and a few profiles, but the newer sourcebooks take precedence.
