Post subject:  Hello everyone! New player trying to build an army.

Greetings!! Me and a friend of mine decided to start this fascinating hobby.
While he wants to make a good army I am planning on a horde and am thinking of an Isengard Army. As of now I have:
24 scouts (2 boxes x12)
6 warg riders
1 Saruman on horse
1 Lurtz
1 Captain and banner bearer.
I also found the starter set of Lotr which included 8 paints and 12 moria goblins and I would be a fool not to buy it since it costed 29 euros and basically bought 8 colours for 1 euro each (about 20 costs the box of 12 goblins).
While we will start with SBG I also have my mind set on WoR, hence the second box of scouts (3x8 in each tray = 24). What is wrong with the Uruk warriors price? Its 10x1 box which forces me to buy one more box just for 1 tray of Uruk Phalanx and 1 of Warriors.
So how do you think of my choises?
Do you think I could make a combined Isengard/Moria Army? It sounds very interesting to me though makes no sense lore-wise.
Any suggestions on how to move next? Should I get a troll for such an army?
Thanks in advance for reading my post and answering :D :aragorn:

If youre just starting, screw the lore, man lol. So did you want to know what kind of army to make out of the units you already have, or are you going to get more? Because I noticed you made the troll topic too. Let me know what if anything you plan on getting, and Ill write you up an army idea.

Thanks LordoftheBrownRing!! I kinda want to go with a combination of Isengard and Moria and I really liked the look of the Isengard Troll, though now I understand it is not worthy of its points. I was thinking an army with goblins/cave trolls as mob and Uruks as the "elite troops". For starters how can I combine what I already have and how should I fill the point gap from what I have to 500 or even 750.

There were moria orcs in Lurtz's/Ugluk's troops attacking the fellowship at amon hen as there were mordor orcs, so there is nothing wrong with it, as long as you only use scouts.
Because Isengart is next to the misty mountains an alliance with the "fighting uruk-hai" is possible (even more if you interpret the moria goblins as "misty mountains" goblins), too.

I would look at ebay, before buying something at GW.

You may should try to get a moria goblin captain to lead your moria goblins, if you don't find one on ebay, you can convert one of your normal goblins to become a captain. Also Ugluk\Vrasku would be a good expension. Ugluk if you want to play themed, Vrasku if you want a really competitive hero.

A nice themed Amon Hen list would be

Lurtz
6 Scouts with orcbows

Ugluk
8 Scouts with shields
3 Scouts

Moria Goblin Captain
4 Moria goblins with shields
4 Moria goblins with spears
_______________________________
350 points, 28 models, 8 might points

A few bows, a good model count, many might points and ugluk can kill a few moria goblins if you are under 50%. And the best thing is you only need a goblin captain (or build one out of one of the archers) and Ugluk.

For 750 Pts Id do this with what you have:

Uruk Captain with heavy armor
6 Wargs
6 scouts with shield

Lurtz
12 scouts with shield

Moria Goblin Captain with shield
5 goblins with shield
5 goblins with spear
2 cave trolls

Moria Goblin Captain with shield
Cave troll
3 goblins with spear
3 goblins with shield

Thats 749 points. I know you need some more troops, but thats a good army. You have plenty of troops, 3 monsters to wreck them, scouts and goblins that can all shield and good strength from the uruks. Then some speed and anti cavalry with the wargs.

Id suggest you leave Saruman out as a new player.

Not exactly that, but something like that.

Leave Saruman out because I suppose is a character with complex abilities for a new player?
Also thank everyone for taking the time to think up an army for me :)

No problem at all man. Yes, thats what I would start with. And yes, magic is hard even for experienced players if they havent used it. Ive played beginners with magic and seen them, and sometimes their 150+ point magicians go down within a few turns of the action because of mistakes. Its AWESOME you have him on a horse though.

One huge investment Id get if I were you, is Mauhur. Hes another Isengard captain with 3 attacks and his special rule lets you change your scouts to Mauhurs Marauders which gives them 8" movement, giving you the option to chase down cavalry more easily and also choosing when and where to charge more. Theyve done very well for me in the past, and for most people who use them correctly.

Yah, I've seen all the Uruk commanders and all are to my liking. Very cool models. Is it just me or is Lurtz the underpowered one here? Maybe little better than Ugluk who has no bow.

Very underpowered. If you look at Narzugs prove from the Hobbit line, that special rule should be attached to lurtz also.

What about Sharku? As a mounted hero is he worth his points?
