In case you're playing the rules where models can pick up weapons from a slain foe. I don't know if those rules are still in there, but it used to be if you killed models in hand-to-hand, you could take a basic weapon from them. Not a special weapon like Sting, Glamdring, Wizards Staff, Anduril, etc. |

Or in case you want to make a house rule where Sauron can don sunglasses and draw his enormous rocket launcher/flame thrower/combi mega machine gun shooter, and before he can fire it in the Shoot Phase the controlling player has to say "Ash nazg say 'ello to my leeetle friend gimbatul!". Thanks to GW giving him a shoot value, we know he'll need a 4+ to hit and promptly turn everything within eyesight into a charted wasteland. Now we know how Mordor came to be. |

Not all models have a shoot value Grip, Fang and Wolf I believe are lacking any sort of value, as are wargs I think. Also models shoot values come in if they try to operate siege weapons. So if they don't have one they couldn't work a catapult if the player wanted them to. |

Maggot's dogs do have a shoot value, they're the worst shots in the Shire list. Even ridden wargs have one, other mounts do not; but of course those never stick around anyway. The values are of no importance for siege equipment, as untrained crew only ever hit on a 6. |

because any model can use siege equipment but suffer a penalty for using it i have seen warg's spider's ect have a 6+ and with a penalty they get a 7+ so its impossible for them to use. |

In some scenarios and mostly siege ones you can place barrels with spears, packs of little stones that any model with a shoot value can use as a projectile weapon. Its mostly a house rule based on the terrain to use equipment. Its not to use siege machines or equipment nor pick up weapons (unless of course players agree to play with that rule ) For example: You and your friend want to play the battle of helms deep and both agree that the defender will have packs of stones to use as projectile weapons. A warrior of rohan without any bow equipped may use them to hit on 4+ with str2 while a haldirs elf without bow may use them to hit on 3+. |

The only penalty for untrained crew is they always hit on a 6. They don't suffer a -1 (or +1 to 7). |
