Post subject:  Man of Gondor or Man of Númenor? Other proxies?

Men of Gondor:
So, I've got the original Fellowship boxed set, as well as the Warriors of Middle-Earth boxed set, and in both cases the men are referred to as Men of Gondor.

However, those same models are today sold as Men of Númenor.

So, if I wanted to build a Warriors of Minis Tirith warband, would I be allowed to use these models? Or are they now restricted to only being used for a Númenor warband?

I come from a Battletech background, and WYSIWIG is not at all important there; but I found some tournament rules for SBG the other day that seemed like it's a very big deal indeed for this game. I just want to make sure that if I show up at the local store to play a game, I don't start off on the wrong foot.

As long as we're on the subject...

Orcs:
I've got the Mordor Orcs starter set. Are these guys restricted to only being used as basic Mordor Orcs, or could they also be used as Morannon Orcs? What about Angmar Orcs? Or Isengard?

I've been so hesitant to paint these guys, because I just am not sure if I'm locking myself into a specific army list with them, or if they can freely float between armies as long as they're clearly identified to my opponent.

Uruk-hai - Pretty much the same concerns as Orcs...

Converting models:
The books I have all seem pretty encouraging on the subject of conversions, but some tourney rules I saw seemed to have a different view. It seemed like it was expected that if a model exists, you should only use that model. So, is it a waste of time to try and convert a couple minis into Banner carriers, or into generic captains?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Orcs are Orcs are orcs, whether Angmar, Isengard, or Mordor. i would say you could use them as Morannons most of the time, but you should make sure you differentiate, and also ask your opponents, as some people wouldn't like that.
Uruk-hai i would say are much tighter, as they look so different from each other, but again ask your opponent.
if the conversions are good, and if youve put in a good bit of work then people actually like it and may admire you for it.
Gondor and Numenor are different army lists. you need to seperate your WoMT and your Men of Numenor, but they could ally in quite well.

Well, I wouldn't play against someone who wanted to use Mordor Orcs as Morannon Orcs, when Morannons have their own plastic box, that not only is the same cost in money, but contains 100% usable models (no 2-handed weapons or bows), and they are a completely different profile.

Mordor, Angmar and Isengard Orcs however all have the same profile.

Uruk-hai - you have different profiles again., although since Mordor Uruk-hai are metal, using Uruk-hai Scouts would be allowed as a proxy until you are able to convert models, or buy the metals, especially since there are no official models for Mordor Uruks with shields or Orc bows, despite having the profile.

Numenorean and Mina Tirith as Isilduhrr says.

Thank you both for the responses!

I see what you're saying in regards to the Morannon Orcs.

As for Uruk's, I've picked up 2 (metal) Uruk's that I'm somewhat confused about. They're clearly identified as Captains in the FotR, and TT books, however I think that same model is now used for Uruk Scouts now . Am I free to use these as Captains, considering I can point to an actual picture of them being identified as such?

I've got an Orc that I'm also not sure about, it's the same as this one:

Just a generic Orc?

That is one of the older Fellowship of the Ring era Orcs. He's just a regular Orc, but his pose and his relative rarity lend themselves well to portraying a Captain.

On a related note, if you have some of those Fellowship Orcs, I would trade for them.

Okay, I think you are overcomplicating things right now haha.

1) Take a look at this collective guide:

viewtopic.php?f=30&t=15007

There you could officialy locate what a captain model is supposed to look like

2) As Lord Hurin alluded to, when dealing with generic captains, feel free to use a troop model that is clearly distinguishable from the rest of your army to represent a captain.

Most people use the older metal troops (moria goblins, uruk scouts, fellowship orcs) as captains because they have a unique pose that is not found in the plastic box sets. 8)

You guys have been extremely helpful, thanks very much! I think I've got a much better handle on what is/isn't acceptable.

I've even setup and played a couple games with my daughter, so I'm starting to get a feel for the basics of the rules.

Sorry Lord Hurin, that's the only metal Orc I've got, so he's staying in my collection. If I happen across some more, I'll let you know. :)

Sadly, getting out of the hobby due to zero interest in my area. I love the minis, but there's just no reason to keep them at this point. Anyway, I hope this is ok to link, but here's my auctions on ebay:

There will be more stuff going up today as well, including some excellently painted Ringwraiths, as well as some rare metal Orcs, etc.

Thanks guys, you have an awesome community here. I'll likely still check in once in awhile. :(
