Post subject:  Quick Question Regarding the rule books
Hello all, a quick question from someone returning to the hobby.

My nephew recently discovered some of my old LOTR miniatures and is keen to play a game. He's only very young but I think the game is simple enough for him to have a go at moving some figures around and roll some dice for a bit if fun.

My question is on what rules to go for. The miniatures I have are from the Mines of Moria set but I no longer seem to have the rules. I understand the Hobbit rules are the most up to date but I do not really want to spend that kind of money at this stage. A quick search on ebay seems to show that is easier to get the old rules for Return of the King or Mines of Moria but I am wondering how much the rules have changed since then. Is it worth holding out to try and grab the mini rulebook from the Hobbit box set if one pops up or will the older booklets do?

Any help much appreciated

The general rules arnt to different. I would really recommend picking up the hobbit rulebook (in either format) as it adds a lot more to the game with the special weapon strikes and the monster special rules. When I play with my 9yr old sister, she tends to take lots of trolls and enjoys throwing aragorn and the rest of my models around the board. The trick is to make it fun for them and not to get bogged down in the finer aspects of the game.

The MoM rules are closer to the Hobbit rules than the RotK rules...almost identical, with a few tweaks. A if you can find a MoM book, go for it.

I would go for the A5 Escape from Goblin Town rulebook. It contains the most up to date rules and you should be able to get it for £15 on eBay without too much hassle which I can't imagine is all that much more than the old MOM book goes for.

The A5 rulebook contains exactly the same rules as the current hardback A4 £50 rulebook just without the hobby sectin and the scenarios and profiles for the hobbit range - perfect for your needs really.

As a quick expansion question on this...the EfGT mini book does not include any points or even the full profile (wargear options for example) for the models, correct? I think as far as the actual playability that's the only significant difference.

If so, is there any information on where those are available (they're not in any of the new Forces books I'm aware of but may be wrong)? Or do you just borrow a friend's Hardback version and make some notes?

Just to answer my own post a bit...I just stumbled on the post here linking to GW's PDF profiles/points for the EfGT models. Nice. No hesitation any more from me. I have saved up enough fun money to get the Hobbit hardback but I'm going to hold out just a wee bit more and grab EfGT instead.
