Hi guys, I've recently decided to get back into the hobby *queue round of applause*
and I was wondering if I need any of the new rule books? I'm happy playing with the models I have and I have the main rule book but it's like 6 years old, if I do need a newer one, I can't seem to find a comprehensive rule book anywhere....
Also, if anyone is aware of any tournaments or gaming clubs ect, in Lincolnshire, please let me know!

Hi Ash,

You will need "the Hobbit: an unexpected journey" hard back rule book (the soft back Goblin Town version does not include points values, though some are on the GW site), and the five source books for the different factions.

Well the Hobbit rule book is the current one which I would recommend getting. Contains all the new special weapon strikes and monster brutal power attacks.

All The Lord of the rings models are in sourcebooks divided into factions. Mordor, kingdoms of men etc etc. I would recommend picking up the ones you need.

If you want to go to tournaments then you'll need the updated rules and sourcebooks.

Thanks guys. I guess I need the Hobbit and the source books then -.-

Thanks a lot. Encouraging to see that the internet isn't full of bad people like I'm used to in the online gaming communities (y)

Define "bad"...

The old Rulebook is still more or less valid, the rules havn't changed a huge amount. A few rules have been removed (e.g. volley fire), a few have been altered slightly (magical abilities) and some new ones have been added (monsters have new dangerous special abilities and models can make special attacks depending on the weapon they're equipped with).

If you're going to play mainly in GW stores, then you will definitely need the new one.

If however you're just going to play at independent clubs, then you should check first what edition they use. If they're still playing the old rules then you could save yourself £50 and spend it on models instead.

Cheers man, that's a good point actually. If anyone has ever been to GW Lincoln...you will know that it is tiny and usually plays host to plebs shouting abuse from outside! haha
The kind of 'bad' people I'm talking about are those you can find on any COD related forums especially tek-9

I have to say that I have not yet encountered anyone or a single club that is playing with out of date rules! the core mechanics are the same, however with new Heroic Actions, Brutal Power Attacks from Monsters, the ability to use more powerful magic with "Channeling" and special rules for every single weapon in the game, you would be very much at a loss and a huge tactical disadvantage without the new book. You simply need a copy of, or a very good understanding of the rules to participate in the game. Nothing drags a game down like a player who doesn't know the rules!

The improvements are fantastic, the book is very expensive (and I am worried about another one replacing it in November, though I hope the present will still be valid!..?) Enjoy!

Actually, I have somewhat of a surplus of Goblin town manuals due to my excessive purchasing of the "Escape from Goblin Town" boxed sets for a modelling project that I am working on. If you send me address I would be quite happy to send you a copy for general furtherance of the hobby?

Hi Ash,

I am quite happy to send the booklet over for free.
I frankly couldn't be bothered to eBay it and hate the whole greed thing surrounding GW prices etc.

Regards,

Michael.
