Hello all ! I've been looking at LOTR SBG for years now. Recently I've found a good deal on Rohan minis - The army I always wanted to buy... so I want to jump in the game but I'm slightly confused. SBG is a skirmish game ? WOTR is an expansion for play large scale battles ? Do I need the Hobbit (100$ !!!) to play or can I just grab a used copy of SBG and play. If yes, are there editions of SBG. What's the most recent ? Tx MARC C |

First off, welcome to the forums! 1) Yes SBG is a skirmish game, consisting of warbands of up to 12 warriors led by a hero. Games run from 250 to 1000 points. 2) WOTR has different rules than SBG and games consist of large formations of units and epic heros. 3) Yes SBG has different editions. The release of the Hobbit SBG is the latest incarnation of the rules from Games Workshop. If you are just starting out and learning the rules, the old SBG rules are similar and would be a cheaper way to get into the system. Be sure to pick up your army's relevant 'sourcebook' (Rohan = Kingdoms of Men) for units, costs, and missions. That being said the new Hobbit rules are the latest version and the majority of players will be using said rules. Welcome to one of the largest money sinks in the world... |

LOL I'm well aware of GW and their over priced policy. I do have a Space Marine and Lizardmen army which are collecting dust. SBG : Currently my only opponent is interested in skirmish games of about 500 points. I already have the Kingdom of men sourcebook. I will not be to playing very often as my main game is INFINITY. So ya PDFs sounds good. Tx guys MARC C @Kinder : Hello ! |

I have to side with whafrog here. GW can be a pain. In any case PDFs are just an means to an end. I know myself and will end up buying the book(s) anyway. |

That's why I genarized it in my secod post. Anyway I meant no offend and I was not aware of layers harassing people for being inquisitive about such things I only knew the no stats, no rules policy of GW. I'm always responsible for my actions and if in this case the responsibility falls elsewere I stop here because I don't want other people to "pay" on my behalf. |

If you just want to play with Rohan, my advice is to get the Kingdoms of Men sourcebook and look to eBay for the small edition of The Hobbit book; the one that comes in the Escape from Goblin Town set. With those, you'll have everything you need to play with any Rohirrim models you'd like. I noticed from the price you quoted for the rule book that you must be in Canada. Whereabouts are you located? |

Hello! I did some miniature trading last night a my gaming store. So I now have the Large Hobbit book+Kingdom of men books. Also, I now have 12 riders and two boxes of 24 warriors (48 models) to build on. I'm aiming at 500pts for me first game. Any must haves heros and leaders - havent read the list building rules yet. Eomer and Eowyn have always been favorite of mine since I read the books in the early 80s. I'm located in Montreal |

Eomer and Eowyn are both good Heroes to have. Erkenbrand is generally considered the "must-have" Rohan guy though. |

I have a spare Eomer mounted if you get anything to trade! As Hurin says though, for foot models, taking Grimbold is a must, and for cavalry, taking Erkenbrand is a must (for their upgrades) I'll be using my all mounted rohan for the first time tomorrow, so keep an eye out! |

So Grimbold and Erkenbrand it is. What do you think of the outriders ? Are they worth it? |

Quote: What do you think of the outriders ? Are they worth it? I was wondering the same thing earlier today! For the same points as a normal RoR, better shoot value, higher courage and long range standfast, sacrificing one defence... What's everyone else's thoughts?? |

My first 500pts list : One group of rider with Eorl+Erkenbrand and a group of warriors with Grimbold. Do you spot anything illegal ruleswise? 090 :: Eorl 90 (General) 133 :: Riders + Banner + Horn + Spears 081 :: Erkenbrand + horse + Redshields Upgrade ------ 304 sub-total ----- 067 :: Grimbold + Helmingas Upgrade 129 :: Warriors + Banner + Horn + Shield ----- 196 sub-total ----- 500 Total |

Looking at it, Eorl and Erkenbrand couldn't be in the same warband and the pedantics would say Grimbold's upgrade is Helmingas, not Redshields. From an army point of view, 500pts might be too small for a banner and you won't need a horn and Erkenbrand has a one which is even better. Your numbers are quite low, probably don't need Eorl (not thematic either) which added to horn and banner being removed, frees up points for more troops. But good effort pal! Quick heads up to help prevent the forum getting in trouble, maybe remove all those individual points values and just give the sum totals |

Glad I can help, although all my advice is pretty much regurgitated advice one ringers have given me in the past! New list looks much much better to me. Since the 6 RoR don't count towards the bow limit, maybe spend your remaining 5 points on some bows for your WoR?! |
