Painting Nazgul/Morgul Knights

How do i make this black cloth look good. It looks like i just basecoated the entire figure and i want it to look a lot better than that.

Drybrush with a dark grey (Edit: Codex Grey), paint the metal parts with tin bitz (don't know the new name for it), give it a wash with a black wash (badab black/nuln oil) and then drybrush with boltgun metal/leadbelcher! Then, for added effect, drybrush the bottom of the robes with a few brown tones to make them look travel-worn! Hope that could help!

that does help a lot! i would post a picture but it says the file is to large.

The best way to post pics is to upload them to a photo-sharing site (a lot of people use photobucket here), then put the link to the pic between [img]and[/img]. Give it a shot?

I would back up that method, it's all about shading. Basically darkest shades in creases and folds, shaded lighter on edges and top levels of cloaks. Next time your out have a look at people's clothes and see how light hits it and causes dark and light areas......but don't stare and get arrested lol. Washes and watered down paints are great for creating dark shading.

so basically i need to use "fifty shades of grey" lol i apologize but i couldnt pass it up

I'm a fan of highlighting to blue on my nazgul. by changing the colour it allows me to keep the overall model very dark but still give the definition that I'm looking for. Not something like ice blue, but adding a bit of regal or ultramarine blue to the black and bring it up a little.

I've also found orange and green work well but you have to keep it dark or they look strange.

I just finished my first morgul knight and im very happy with the results so far. When i can i will post pics and see what everyone thinks.

I hope this is ok? i havent been painting very long, about 5 months casually and this is also my first attempt at basing

It's looking very good. Perhaps a black wash to bring down the blue effect slightly if it looks like that in person as well. But my guess is that it's a trick of the flash photo making the blue stand out so much. If it's more subtle in person and you're happy with it then that's what matters.

Stick with whichever of those two lightings looks most life-like..good start too, while I don't care for those models, I do like your style.

I have to agree with RangerofTheNorth. Your paint style seems to complement the models better then the one GW uses IMO.

I painted mine similarly - take Beowulf's advice and give the cloth a watered down black wash.

For my Gondor army I used the new Eshin Grey with a light drybrush of Codex/Dawnstone, then washed with Nuln Oil/Badab Black. I really like the Eshin Grey, you almost can't see it, but your eye still feels like it's highlighted. Check Denethor's sleeves, and the Fountain Guard cloaks
