Post subject: | New to the Game - Which of this do I get? |
I am brand new to the game but am planning to get pretty serious about this. I am buying some miniatures used to get going and have found someone who is going to trade with me from their old collection. Below I have included a list of what they have. Can anyone tell me if any of this stuff is rare, good for game play or otherwise not to be missed? Any help is appreciated: LOTR — The Fellowship of the Ring Number Description Qty Packaging Notes 05 01 60 Fellowship of the Ring Battle Strategy Game 2 Box 05 07 The Fellowship of the Ring 1 Box 9 figures 05 09 Attack at Weathertop x1 Box 10 figures 05 10 Escape from Orthanc x1 Box 4 figures 05 11 Battle at Khazad-Dum x1 Box 2 figures 05 12 Ambush at Amon Hen x1 Box 10 figures 05 35 Uruk-hai x1 Blister 3 figures 05 36 Uruk-hai Bowman x1 Blister 3 figures 05 37 Gondorian Spearmen x1 Blister 3 figures 05 40 Saruman x2 Blister 1 figure 05 41 High Elf Spearmen x1 Blister 3 figures 05 42 Ringwraith x1 Blister 1 figure 05 44 Mordor Orc Bowmen x2 Blister 3 figures 05 46 Lutz x1 Blister 1 figure 05 50 Cave Troll x1 Blister 1 figure 05 51 Moria Armored Goblins x1 Blister 4 figures 05 79 Mounted Arwen w/Frodo x1 Blister 1 figure 06 31 Mounted Ringwraiths x1 Box 3 figures 05 52 Moria Goblin Bowmen x3 Blister 4 figures Elendil and Isildur x1 Blister 2 figures Warriors of Middle Earth x1 Box 24 figures LOTR — The Two Towers 05 02 60 The Two Towers Battle Strategy Game 2 Box 05 15 The Fighting Uruk-hai x2 Box 24 figures 05 16 Heroes of Helm's Deep x1 Box 8 figures 05 17 Uruk-hai Siege Ballista x1 Box 05 18 Warg Attack x1 Box 5 figures 05 19 Treebeard, Mighty Ent x1 Box 05 21 Uruk-hai Siege Troops x1 Box 10 figures 05 63 Uruk-hai Berserkers x1 Blister 3 figures 05 65 Uruk-hai Command x1 Blister 2 figures 05 68 Gandolf on Shadowfax x1 Blister 1 figure 05 72 Gamling, Royal Guard Standard Bearer x2 Blister 1 figure 05 73 Wildmen of Dunlending x2 Blister 3 figures 05 74 Gollum, Sam & Frodo x1 Blister 1 figure 05 78 Cave Troll with Spear x1 Blister 1 figure 05 80 Uruk-hai Battering Ram x1 Blister LOTR — The Return of the King 05 03 60 The Return of the King Battle Strategy Game x1 Box The Return of the King Rule Book x1 05 28 Mordor Orcs x1 Box 24 figures 05 33 In the Clutches of Shelob x1 Box 3 figures 05 94 Easterlings x1 Blister 3 figures 06 27 Mordor Troll x1 Box 1 figure 06 34 Army of the Dead x1 Box 10 figures LOTR — Siege of Gondor 06 09 Mordor War Catapult x1 Box 10 figures 06 47 Orc Trackers x2 Blister 3 figures 06 50 Mordor Orc Shaman x1 Blister 1 figure 06 53 Mordor Siege Bow x1 Blister 3 figures LOTR — Shadow & Flame 06 44 Uruk-hai Shaman x2 Blister 1 figure 06 43 Barrow-wights x1 Blister 2 figures LOTR — Battle of Pelennor Fields 05 31 War Mumakil of Harad x1 Box 14 figure thanks, Jason |

Well, as per the new rulesystem, I'd suggest you decide with what army you want to play. Then see what he has to offer that would fit in with that army. I think we could help you better if you decide what army you'd like to play with first, so we can look into the most basic and important mini's to get you started. Rueben |

I want to know your friend so i can maybe have a few From the looks of his spare troops you could forge a decent Isenguard army including Saruman, Lurtz, Uruk-Hai Command and quite a few uruk-hai troops including a few crossbowmen... |

I'm not an expert gamer or anything of the sort, so don't put too much weight on my advice. I don't know what your budget is or how many points you're looking for in an army. By the way, all metal models are now rare and won't be found in retail stores anymore and the new replacement of Finecast resin models are expensive and have defects, so I say hold onto this guy you've found and hopefully he's giving you huge discounts. Plastic box sets have also been reduced from a quantity of 24 to 12 and are much more expensive in retail now. So here's my two cents: LOTR — The Fellowship of the Ring Number Description Qty Packaging Notes 05 01 60 Fellowship of the Ring Battle Strategy Game 2 Box 05 07 The Fellowship of the Ring 1 Box 9 figures Very good to have the 9 main heros right away for a good force 05 09 Attack at Weathertop x1 Box 10 figures Comes with Aragorn & Hobbits, but get it for the 5 Wraiths for a Mordor army. 05 10 Escape from Orthanc x1 Box 4 figures It's Gandalf, Saruman, a Great Eagle, and a useless palantir show piece. You can get the wizards from other blisters/boxes, only get this box for the Eagle because it's rare and is meant for a Free peoples/ Woodland Realm army. 05 11 Battle at Khazad-Dum x1 Box 2 figures Get it for the Balrog for a Moria army, huge points cost monster, you can pick up Gandalf some place else if all you want is him. 05 12 Ambush at Amon Hen x1 Box 10 figures Don't really recommend, more of a diorama show piece, pick up Lurtz and Uruk scouts separately. 05 35 Uruk-hai x1 Blister 3 figures These are the scouts, good base troops for Isengard 05 36 Uruk-hai Bowman x1 Blister 3 figures Scouts, Isengard 05 37 Gondorian Spearmen x1 Blister 3 figures I'll take a guess that this is the Citadel guard which are elite for Gondor, otherwise if they're only the Numenorian spearmen they only fit in with a Last Alliance army. 05 40 Saruman x2 Blister 1 figure Your Isengard leader, powerful wizard 05 41 High Elf Spearmen x1 Blister 3 figuresFor Free Peoples/High Elf army & Last Alliance 05 42 Ringwraith x1 Blister 1 figure Add this guy with the Wraiths from Weathertop box set 05 44 Mordor Orc Bowmen x2 Blister 3 figures Mordor backbone archers 05 46 Lutz x1 Blister 1 figure Isengard Hero, a must have 05 50 Cave Troll x1 Blister 1 figure Moria monster, good to have one or more 05 51 Moria Armored Goblins x1 Blister 4 figures Moria core troops, strength in numbers 05 79 Mounted Arwen w/Frodo x1 Blister 1 figure I say nuseless but great show piece 06 31 Mounted Ringwraiths x1 Box 3 figures Never heard of this box set before. 3 mounted wraiths? Would go along well with the other aforementioned 6 on foot; 9 wraiths total 05 52 Moria Goblin Bowmen x3 Blister 4 figures Moria fodder once again, str in #s Elendil and Isildur x1 Blister 2 figures Last Alliance leaders, don't recommend Last Alliance army unless you're into a period piece. These guys can't ally with most models because of time period Warriors of Middle Earth x1 Box 24 figures Last Alliance army, Elves cost a lot in points, you'll be outnumbered. LOTR — The Two Towers 05 02 60 The Two Towers Battle Strategy Game 2 Box 05 15 The Fighting Uruk-hai x2 Box 24 figures Isengard army, a must have strong core troops 05 16 Heroes of Helm's Deep x1 Box 8 figures Good for Rohan army obviously, with Theoden, Gamling, Eomer and a few more I think, plus a few repeating members of the Fellowship 05 17 Uruk-hai Siege Ballista x1 Box Not sure how good siege machines are in SBG. Isengard army, cost a fortune now in retail along with everything else Finecast. If it's cheap and you're building Isengard, why not get it? 05 18 Warg Attack x1 Box 5 figures Dont' recommend except for Sharku mounted, Isengard Hero, not sure how good he is though. 05 19 Treebeard, Mighty Ent x1 Box Free Peoples/Woodland Realm monster, great for delivering a punch 05 21 Uruk-hai Siege Troops x1 Box 10 figures Isengard, unless you're planning on doing much siege assault games I say pass and leave it for some other time to collect 05 63 Uruk-hai Berserkers x1 Blister 3 figures Isengard shock troops, must have because they're cool. 05 65 Uruk-hai Command x1 Blister 2 figures Isengard, must have lower tier heroes. 05 68 Gandolf on Shadowfax x1 Blister 1 figure I don't think he's necessary for a good army, but hey it's Gandalf... THE WHITE... ON SHADOWFAX! I think he costs too much though and would take up all the points in your army + I don't think he's that much special from the Grey pilgrim to warrant the high points cost. 05 72 Gamling, Royal Guard Standard Bearer x2 Blister 1 figure Must have for Rohan army 05 73 Wildmen of Dunlending x2 Blister 3 figures Isengard, fodder troops 05 74 Gollum, Sam & Frodo x1 Blister 1 figure, get this only for Gollum except Gollum is a weird special rules kind of character. 05 78 Cave Troll with Spear x1 Blister 1 figure Moria monster again, nice to have 1 or maybe more 05 80 Uruk-hai Battering Ram x1 Blister Isengard, like the siege crew, even more so not necessary but makes a great show piece for the army. LOTR — The Return of the King 05 03 60 The Return of the King Battle Strategy Game x1 Box The Return of the King Rule Book x1 05 28 Mordor Orcs x1 Box 24 figures Mordor backbone troops, you want 05 33 In the Clutches of Shelob x1 Box 3 figures Mordor monster, but I think Shelob has a flaw in her special rules that doesn't make her worth it in points 05 94 Easterlings x1 Blister 3 figures Fallen realms army, great choice of warriors just like Gondor Warriors 06 27 Mordor Troll x1 Box 1 figure Mordor heavy hitter 06 34 Army of the Dead x1 Box 10 figures Gondor army, heard they're not worth their points. LOTR — Siege of Gondor 06 09 Mordor War Catapult x1 Box 10 figures Mordor, just like my Isengard Ballista description 06 47 Orc Trackers x2 Blister 3 figures Mordor elite archers if I remember correctly, want to shoot someone down? they're the crew 06 50 Mordor Orc Shaman x1 Blister 1 figure Mordor, necessary for more magic power gameplay 06 53 Mordor Siege Bow x1 Blister 3 figures Mordor, again like the others concerning war machines LOTR — Shadow & Flame 06 44 Uruk-hai Shaman x2 Blister 1 figure Isengard magicians, maybe you want 06 43 Barrow-wights x1 Blister 2 figures Angmar, don't think they're necessary LOTR — Battle of Pelennor Fields 05 31 War Mumakil of Harad x1 Box 14 figure Love this model, how it plays in game, I don't know. Fallen Realms army. Heard it can get easily taken down if you're opponent can formulate the right strategy. I recommend you check out the topic under SBG forum called, "Continuos Tactical Discussion SBG" sticky thread. There you'll find more member's info and tactics on certain troops. Check out the index page first to see if you can find what you're looking for. |

Thanks for the help. I think I can get most of this stuff at a pretty good price. I'm buying another used lot on Wednesday and I have to see what is in it before I make a final decision on these guys. More feedback is appreciated. |

I agree with previous post(s) regarding the need to determine a "favorite" army then focus purchases around that decision. I started my SBG adventure with the intent of playing story-line based scenarios. I purchased the OR book, the 3 journey books and miniatures as needed for each scenarios. I am almost finished with the Fellowship -- I make the terrains from the journey books so it's been pretty slow for me. It's been fun and my army is quite diverse as a result. I am at a point where I have focused on an army I would like to explore deeper. Whatever you decide, I hope to see pictures of your army in the future. Regards, SeveredHead |
