I bought a magazine yesterday because I saw some examples of terrain making that made my jaw drop. A chap called Emmanuel Nouaillier wrote a brief article about modelling French urban scenes from the 1940s and 50s - I did a search on the web and found his photobucket gallery.

Look and wonder at the genius:

These are 1/72 scale - 20mm in wargaming terms!

Holy handgrenade! That's the most realistic model-terrain I've ever seen! You can hardly see it's not realistic!

Madness!!

You'll need to tell me again that it is wargaming terrain ... I wouldn't see the difference if you told me it was "real" !

I was staring at the photos for quite a while, and I could almost not figure out that this is a war gaming terrain except for two photos (and it was because of the angel they was taken from)...utterly amazing!

oh, I like all this exfoliating/peeled off old typography/logos/names! the realistic rust, all the different stones and materials!
(too bad, there are no shops in Minas Tirith or Lothlorien ... (“ Strong swords - 1000 years guarantee”, “Elegant Elven Bows - since 4500 years!” “Homemade Lembas”....)

Shops in Minas Tirith used symbols (in the film) based on medieval ones that can still be seen in cities in Europe.

I have seen terrain of this quality before, but in 54mm (that's 1:32 or 1:35 scale). My guess is that he based it off a lot of good quality photographs detailing the structures from all angles. Research, gathering material to base your work upon... it all counts. Finding manufacturers who make things like scale corrunater iron and drains/gutters - it all adds to the degree of realism and detail.

On top of all that, this guy obviously is a tremendously talented painter.

Wow, quite amazing!

Naming Minas Tirith shops, reminiscent of a year 8 L.O.T.R book analysis.......
