Durin's Folk, 750 pts. I'd like it to be quite competitive, but I can't feel it as such

List one:

-WARBAND 1
Balin w/Durin's Axe (Leader)
3 Vault Warden Team
4 Iron Guards
1 Dwarf Banner Bearer

-WARBAND 2
Gimli
6 Dwarf warriors w/shield
6 Dwarf warrios w/bow

-WARBAND 3
Floi
8 Khazad Guards

-WARBAND 4 (Allied)
Galadriel, lady of light

35 models, 7 Mights. Galadriel is here as anti-nazgul unit, since magic is a really big problem for this army.

List 2

WARBAND 1
Gimli
6 Dwarf warriors w/shield
6 Dwarf warrios w/bow

WARBAND 2
Balin, son of Fundin w/durin axe
4 Iron Guards
8 Khazad Guards

WARBAND 3
King's Champion
5 Vault Warden Team

WARBAND 4
Floi

40 units, 6 bows,6 throwing weapons, 9 might

List 3

WARBAND 1
Thorin Oakenshield with Shield
6 Erebor Dwarves w/Shields
6 Erebor Dwarves w/Spears

WARBAND 2
Balin Son of Fundin w/Durin's Axe
6 Dwarves w/shields
6 Dwarves w/bows

WARBAND 3
Gimli
6 Khazad Guards
1 Banner Bearer

WARBAND 4
Radagast the Brown w/Sebastian

35 units, 12 might, 6 bows, 2 Throwing Weapons, Magic. Also thinking of dropping Sebastian to give all erebor sperman a shield. The wizard can flunk the enemy's cavalry and immobilise the monsters when needed.

What do you say? Any comment is welcomed.

Take list 3, drop Gimli and the banner bearer for the Kings Champion. He comes with 2 banners and is better than Gimli.

Or

Take list 2 and dump Gimli for Dwalin and give him Thorin's Warband from your third list.

My advice would be list 3, only because I've never seen (aside from 3 ppl I taught) anyone properly use vault wardens

I'll be honest: I've never actually played with Vault Wardens. I only have two, and for "collector's reasons". I think a key to their correct use is in the name itself. Those are not units to send in the open battlefield: when flanked, they go down easily. I thought of having them in a diagonal line, 1/2 cm of distance to cover as much ground as possible and shield the spearmen, with a banner behind and one side covered by some big element (we use lots of houses) and the other covered by a powerful hero. That's pretty much why, in list 2, they stand with the king's champion.
But still, that's only theory. Sounds dumb even to myself.

Funny thing is, I'd like list 3 the most too. Raddy saved lots of units in the past with his panic steed, dropping 3 knight on their heinies with a channeled spell and a fourth a turn later. Plus, the spell works also on Fell Beasts and Charriots, and I think there's nothing funnier than taking out a well-payed nazgul's steed with a spell so easy to cast.

You're not incorrect on the vault wardens strengths and weaknesses, I was more referring to once you're in game and the lines are clashing what you do then. They become far more difficult to use to optimal performance than any other dwarf.

All very good points, to further what you said, stopping cavalry charges into your lines is a huge thing as you don't have any yourself (the curse of us Dwarf purists lol).

In addition there's no better application for renew than on a D8/9 Dwarf hero who is really hard to wound as is. Be prepared for Raddy to become target priority for an opponent once you've restored a few wounds. This is a good thing as he's untouchable to archery and magic with his elven cloak, woodland creature, and his always having LOS for his own magic

I've always seen them used to flank Durin, who in turn is backed up by Mardin. Then you have either Khazads or just warriors protecting the flanks. VW are designed to hold the center of a battle line, not the flanks.

Should I drop the archers and take some extra infantry instead?

I'd keep them. Dwarf Archers are stout enough to fight in close when they need, and the archery is useful

Archers can take care of themselves. Had an opponent swarm two of my archers thinking he'd mow them down only to have that portion of his flank tied up. "I hit him, what do I need to wound again?"

"6"

"Wha? But.. but... those are archers!"

:-D
