3 drops, 3 extra 3+ bows, 3 extra str4 models, 3 might points to spread around for the heroic move offs after charging.

Damian O and Tom H think I should be taken Theoden instead, but 1) Don't have him 2) Can't see a reason for taking him with Eorl about, who is tough to take from a theme point of view!

I know that's hypocritical given the three rangers of the north but still :)

Those guys know what's what, handsome too, I'd listen to them.

I've got a nice shiny Theoden you can borrow, ah go on, it'll look soooooooo much better on the table.

+ D7, F5, C5 2 Fate and 4 smaller cav warbands are all big plusses. You've only got 1 less Might, deployment drops are for cowards and your bows won't matter cos you'll always miss with them :-)

DO THE RIGHT THING

James! You don't have Theoden!?!? Or you just don't have Theoden painted? If the former then I'm pretty sure I can help you out there. I'll check out your trade topic perhaps?

I'd get rid of Gandalf put in Eorl and add more units. That's the only suggestion I'd really have.

Gandalf is just not worth his pts as gandalf the white.

gandalf i feel could be incredibly useful, although you probably dont need the white upgrade(but it is a bit more fluffy maybe but would save you 50pts), blinding light will really help protect your riders and keep the mounted, also having immobilise can be really quite handy.

i am guessing the banner is for when you draw ed in the first round again ;) you yourself have pointed out that they are not that useful when mounted due to the base size. i dont have the kingdoms of men book so i dont know how many points everything is but would be cool and fluffy if you swapped him and the rangers for gamling with the royal banner and more riders.

From a theme point of view its not that far off from a pelanor fields list, aye I have to agree that swapping Gandalf for Theoden with pts left over for Gamiling with banner would be pretty cool. Alternatively drop Eomer from Knight of the Pelanor to his Helm's Deep profile and you can say its from any point prior to the siege of Gondor. (throw in Aragorn and do a Helm's Deep charge :) )

That said, if you can't field Gandalf the White in 1000pts then frankly your never going to justify his pts cost. He should be instrumental in backing up your cavalry or helping you deal with monsters.

On banners, they work for me with cavalry. Yes the bases are bigger, this includes the rider holding it though. While a banner is useful for infantry, it can be the difference between winning and losing fights when cavalry are charged.
If your horses have been charged, you need to win as many fights as possible to stay alive for next turn and banner can really help with this.

My only concern with the list is numbers, I'd suggest dropping all but one ranger of the North (who can then be wounded/shattered Aragorn :P) to put in some extra riders.

Good Hunting :)

Lol I'm sure it will look fantastic anyway.

@ gondorian captain......nice thematic suggestions that still work. I guess we can always count on you for that 8)

I am all about the theme :)
To be fair its just the way I like to play but just becasue a list is themed does not mean it can't be competitive :)

Hmmm I think if I don't take the three RotN mounted, I'm more inclined to boost numbers rather than take Theoden...

6 more Westfold Redshields leaves 9 points to spare, maybe to upgrade 4 Westfold Redshields to 4 RRG mounted or, or 1 RRG mounted and 1 more Son of Eorl...

I'd go with 4 WFRS, 1 RRG and a SoA*

Son of Awesome ;).

Son of Eorlsome?

...nevermind  looks a tough list, would be tough to face regardless of scenario.

Erkenbrand wasn't on the pelanor field ;) but he has to be in every Rohan army. I don't like those upgrades, you can only do having a specific named hero.
I'd take Aragorn over Gandalf his might point per turn is very useful for your riders.

That's probably why he said "not far off" :P

For my money, a major magic hero at 1000pts seems too good to pass up, and I'm with Gondorian Captain. If you can't take Gandalf the White at 1000pts then when the hell can you?

Personally I think you should always aim for theme. That's not to say you shouldn't make it competitive too, but while remaining within the constraints of fielding an army you're actually likely to encounter in Middle Earth. Also, including those not-so-optimal but characterful heroes may not always be the best path to victory, but it often leads to a much more enjoyable game for both sides.

Ah, I believe I have been getting Erkenbrand mixed up with Eflhelm as I thought that both were present at Pelenor.

I do sometimes wish that some of the Rohan Heroes like Theoden and Hama were just that little bit better. Erkenbrand is a great hero but he's so cheap that he has become the auto include option for Rohan armies (including mine lol).

Theme is important to me, very important because without it I find the story is detracted from and I'm then just going through a dice rolling exercise with rules x stacking with ability y. Lotr for me has always been about recreating those stories and epic battles.
But I have come to understand that not everyone sees the game that way and that for some making nightmare lists or making abilities stack is where the appeal lies.

Play for theme or for fury but be honest about what you're trying to do :)
