Hey guys,

I've got a 600pt game coming up against a dwarf army soon and although I've got a bulk of troops I'm fairly happy with, I'm not sure who I want to lead it. Here's the army -

Warband 1 -
Prince Imrahil/ Gandalf the Grey/ Aragorn (Strider)

Warband 2 - 151
Cirion
6 WOMT shields
6 WOMT spears
shields

Warband 3 188
Beregond
6 Citadel Guard
Spears
5 Knights of Minas Tirith
Shields
1 Knight of Minas Tirith
Banner

Warband 4 - 116
Damrod
12 Rangers

Normally this list would have some more troops and be led by Faramir, but I want to try something a bit different this time. I'm fully aware that Gandalf and Strider are very expensive and I'd be sinking a lot of points in to them, but as I'm facing a dwarf army I don't think I'll be facing more than 3 full warbands (also I have a fairly good idea of what models my friend can field, except for heroes). I'm also considering mounting up Boromir COTWT but then I have to take out even more (if I want to use Gandalf or Strider I have to ditch the knight with the banner).

Many thanks,
Jake.

Maybe Aragorn with his free might will give you an advantage in movement over the dwarves.

I'd vote Gandalf, his magic would be very helpful against the dwarves.

Damn, I'd love to Lewis, I just don't own the Guard of the Citadel model!

i understand that this would be ripping off all your points, but equipping Aragorn with Anduril will smash those high-defence dwarves. perhaps not the wisest move, but it will be worth it to see his face when his dwarven armor is torn like tissue! if you do that, i'd ditch the citadel guard. :aragorn:

As a dwarf player I'd shake this gentleman's hand if you did that lol. True Aragorn could wreak havoc on your opponents dwarves, but that's 250 points right there in one model, and he would probably be dispatched quickly as he would be viewed as the one significant threat

If you mount king aragorn he can get to any point of the enemy battle line and thanks to the dwarf heroes slow movement you could keep his heroes away (#dwalin) long enough to cream his guys.

It's tempting. With Aragorn's free point of might, if I lose priority I can move him to an area relatively free from threats.

And a free heroic combat every turn? When you charged there is pretty much no way you won't kill what you charged. 8 dices on 4+...

Either go for him or for Imrahil + 5 spears for those rangers. They can give their F4 to your WOMT making them a lot better against dwarfs.

The only problem with your army is that you won't be killing a thing. Gondor is like the hardest choice against Dwarves.

I know what you mean, I've played his dwarves before and it's almost like fighting myself with all that high defence. That said, it wasn't too difficult and I did win in the end. Given my lower FV, feint was very useful in helping to wound.

Spearing up the rangers is a good idea though, I'll add that to the list regardless of who leads it, but at this point I think Aragorn with Anduril is just too many points.

It could work when dropping your Knights. Getting something like:

Mounted Elessar
Damrod
Beregond
17 WOMT w/shield
10 Rangers w/spear
6 CG w/spear

600 pts, 36 men, 12 bows

Or beg your opponent for a 700 points match?

I don't think he wants to play 700pts just yet, he wants to add more to his forces. I'm not sure dropping the knights is worth it in order to fit in Elessar either. The knights expose the dwarves' biggest weakness, their lack of mobility, and the lances will almost be as useful as Anduril when it comes to wounding his troops.

I think with this list I'll try using Gandalf. It's something I havn't done before and will add a new element to our games. Cheers for everyone's help though :)

I also play Gondor most of the time, just use Borormir of the fellowship on horse as an ally. Six might and a Nice special rule will do the job ;).
