Even if you only want to play at a low pts like 750 or 1,000, if you want to play WotR you will need a lot more than that I'm afraid.

You will want at least 3 formations of shield uruks, 4 companies ecah. Thats 3 x 32 + 96 shield uruks.
Then you will want at least 32 pikemen, at least 24 crossbowmen, perhaps a troll, perhaps some beserkers, or warg riders or something else to compliment.

You will also need at least 1 epic hero, you should have say Saruman and Thrydan.

What points amount are you aiming at? As a starter, I'd recommend 1000, but the game only gets really fun (and more balanced, generally speaking) at 1500-2000 points.

For Isengard, the things to have are Saruman (even if he's a quarter of your points), Thrydan (a captain, but with 2 major bonuses for free), Uruks with Shields (great front line troops), Crossbows (death from a distance to nearly anything that isn't very well armoured), and some elites you like (Berserkers, Ferals, Dunlendings, whatever. The possibilities are endless.)

I've made a full review of Isengard units, tactics and relative values here:http://one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=88&t=22651.

But to really help, we'd need an army list or at least some idea of what and how much you want.

Is this completely necessary or just an optimum force?

I've accrued quite a large Rohan and Isengard SBG army (2000 points or so of each) and was looking to pick up a cheap copy of WOTR to try out something a bit different every now and then.

I've got a fair few models but I certainly don't intend to paint more than 24 (3 coys right?) of any one type, there's just too many pretty shiny things that get my vote above painting another 70 shield uruks I won't ever use in SBG.

I guess what I'm asking is if I just want to play with friends, so not hugely competitive games, will I get by with a max of 24 of each troop type or is there some sort of 'core' army selection rules that will mean I need to buy/paint more.

Cheers for the help
