I'm having a 2000pt battle with a friend soon. He will be Lothlorien/Mirkwood and I will be Moria. I was thinking of having two balrogs in my army and was wondering what your thoughts are on this? :)

That it would be interesting to see the outcome of the battle but that it will be a really boring one :P

TBH it should really be called a balrog. There were quite a few balrogs so it is possible :)

this balrog is the only known one still alive, but there could be one or more sleeping undiscovered.
ghulavar is also one of the deamons like the balrog and there could also be more "ghulavars".
according to the rules it will be inpossible, but if you are looking from a perspective of middle earth it should be doable.

If you can borrow or find proxy toys, how about two Dragons? 8)

Why not 4 Dragons?

In LoME, Balrogs weren't named heroes, but I think this regrettably changed when they scarpped those rules.

You should ask first, there was definitely more than 1 balrog, at least in the first age. Of the 7 Balrogs, only 3 were ever mentioned to be killed, meaning that there is a distinct possibility that there are up to 4 other Balrogs out there. I would say that Ghulavhar would qualify as either one of the weaker Balrogs or as a greater vampiric Maiar. You could use Dwellers as other lesser Balrogs if you wanted.

personally I field 2 and even 3 sometimes in keeping with the silmarilion and I'm also working on making a full warband of dwellers in the dark at some point simply to play a godzilla army that fits my image of battles pre orcs

I'd allow it in a game against me, dunno about tournaments though. However, Balrogs are classified as "Rare" in War of the Ring, meaning you could take more than one in your army. If you used this as evidence, I can't see how anyone could complain about it.

If you are using the latest hobbit rules, you can only have one of each named hero, the balrog is named ("The Balrog", not "Balrog") and it is a hero, as such you can only have one, legally.

So they could easily complain against it, although I don't think having two balrogs is really that much of a problem anyway. With the new hobbit rules it becomes a bit harder to feed them one unit per turn, but there should be plenty of ways to deal with two monstrous heroes if you have 800 points worth of options.

@Theik One could argue that one could use "the Balrog" as a template for other members of it's species and for precision's sake name the Balrogs in question individually...
In the sourcebook it does indeed say "The Balrog", however it doesn't say Durin's bane(the name it was actually known under).

Personally I name my 3 balrogs after the enemies they slew:
Gothmog Feanor's bane
Durin's bane
Glorfindel's bane

for tournies ask the people in charge, and friendly matches should always be fine, I wouldn't want to play agaisnt someone pedantic enough to have a problem with it tbf.

This is completely true, it is not a "true" name. Neither are "The Goblin King" or "The Goblin Scribe", which would make fighting a goblin town force a lot more frustrating.

In the end it always comes down to what you agree to with your opponent. If they are fine with you fielding ten balrogs, by all means, go right ahead. It's a game after all.

But I would expect that if somebody in a tournament brought it up as an issue, the organization would end up siding with them. So have fun but be wary of tournaments.
