Post subject:  Some dwarf questions

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if any of you could answer some questions I have relating to dwarfs, in particular, their rangers.

1. How viable/effective are dwarf rangers, how should they be equipped and used?

2. What are your opinions on Marin and Drar? Can they lead seperate warbands?

3. How effective would an all ranger dwarf army be? i.e. dwarf rangers and iron guard led by Marin and Drar

Thanks in advance for any answers :-D

They aren't viable at all in my point of view. They are just to expensive compared to what they can bring on the battlefield. If you compare them to a dwarf warrior with a dwarf bow:

dwarf warrior with bow
pros:
- high bowstrength
- high armor value
- points effective
cons:
- less range
- lower hitting chance

Dwarf ranger
pros:
- longer range
- better aim( higher hitting chance)
cons:
- not point effective
- relatively low armor

I prefer higher strenght on the bow then longer range and if you speak of the look of the model I would say dwarf rangers are sculped somewhat better.

Our standard Dwarf player usually has some Rangers in his force. As an opponent I find that he usually plays them well. The accuracy does matter and he usually picks good targets. I don't know if I'd say they pay for themselves consistently but whenever he uses them they are a part of his force I need to account for and address.

In recent games they have been used to target Wargs and Spiders effectively. In a game last Friday he had them focusing their fire on the Mouth of Sauron, forcing me to burn my Fate and allowing one Wound against him, which actually gave him the one extra VP needed to win the game 7-6.

If using the -1 shoot value while moving I would say they become more of a liability than an asset though. However, if you did not use that new rule then they can work as a supplemental part of your army to provide some ranged fire.

I don't believe you can make a very effective army with just Dwarf Rangers. Slowish movement, average defense, average bow fire. Nothing to help compensate and let them stand out effectively.
