Hello, I have a few lotr miniatures around since that is what got me into teh hobby (tough i didnt paly them that much). What i wanted to build is a warriors of the last alliance army and later on a mordor force to put on the other side of the table. I have the rulebook from the MoM set and the Forces of ME book and also the gondor in flames book. Now the last two are kind of obsolete with teh new realeses (right?) so i was wonderign what i should buy next (apart from the free peoples book). I have: A box of WOTLA, isildur, elrond, Elendil, 3 high elf spearmen, elf command blister, gilgalad (tough his spear is broken). Also a bunch of elf bowman/swordsman (of the last alliance) are on their way since i got them of ebay cheap. on the evil side i have: a few starter goblins (tough i dont think they are themed so i wont be using them i guess), 1 box of morannon orcs, cave troll from the mom set, about 4 ringwraiths on foot. For the good side. what should i buy next to get to a nice point level (think 600 is a bit standard for a smaller game right?). i guess another box of WOTLA but what els? what hero would be good for such a smaller points level? Any ideas for a working list? It doesnt have to be very competetive but fun and themed workable Thanks for the help! |

Not to dissuade you, but a last alliance army is kind of difficult to create unless it's quite large. With the new war band system requiring heroes for every 12 warriors, and last alliance heroes being so expensive, you're not going to have much to work with until you get above 750 points IMHO, unless you resort to normal captains, which kind of defeats the purpose. Also, if you want last alliance models with a good range of equipment it ends up being a bit expensive because you need to buy metal models. Each ally has its own bow limit, so if you want to max Numenorian bows you'll need to buy metal Numenorian archers. If you want a solid D6 front line, you'll need to buy metal high elves that come with a spear and shield. If you're thinking the spears might be wasted on the front line elves, you'll have to convert them. If you want Numenorians with spears to back them up, they're metal too. If you're not worried about proxying models and don't plan to play tournaments, I think you'll get a lot more mileage out of boxes of Galadhrim and Warriors of Gondor to represent the last alliance. The configurations are better and plastic is easier to convert. Still, the last alliance and Numenorian models are quite nice to look at. |

Hmm, Galadhrim could look cool alongside Numenoreans. But yeah, as whafrog says, they're a hard army to collect due to the amount of metal. You can throw the weaker Numenoreans in the rank and file if you want and use the Elves as a hard hitting elite force but you'll still want Elven numbers to maximise the numbers of your Elven Archers. On the plus side though, Numenoreans shouldn't be too hard to give a spear too in exchange for their sword. But I think the key will be to choose one of the major heroes to build your force around (2 if you don't want many warriors) and the rest captains. An example (based on what you have - you'd just need to buy the Numenorean Bows and one more lot of Elven Spears) would be: Elendil (with shield) 8 Numenoreans (shields and spears) 3 Numenoreans (bows) Elven Captain (with HA and shield) 6 Elven Warriors (HA, shields, spears) 4 Elven Warriors (HA, elven blades) Elven Captain (with HA and elf bow) 6 Elven Warriors (HA, elf bows) Total: 598, 30 models, 10 bows I chose Elendil for the list because he'll be able to go toe to toe with anything and his free heroic combats will help him actually do some damage. Don't take it as an optimal list, it's just something I threw up quickly. Most people will recommend never taking Elves armed with Elven Blades (as they come with a hand weapon) but rather always giving them shields. Which is all well and good if you can convert/afford it (or are prepared to use Galadhrim models). In general though, you'll probably want to get rid of spears on your front line. For example, discard all the Elven spears and count them as hand weapons and you could buy another Numenorean archer or get rid of the Numenorean spears and buy another Elf (non-archer). Personally, I prefer using the Heavy Armoured Gondor list to represent Numenor. I mean, thick leather over the top of chainmail counts as HA to me . And there's much more variety in the list. Rangers = well Rangers/pathfinders/scouts, SKoDA = Elite Knights (iffy due to shortage of horses), CG = elite warriors (also good steel bow representation), GotFC = King's Guard, Avenger/Trebuchet = Siege Equipment (for attacking Mordor, defending forts). I don't know about others, but I'd be happy to let you combine the Elves and Numenoreans into one list in friendly games for army selection which would definitely help you with bow limits. |

Thanks for the replys. Cost might eb an issue indeed but i will just take my time with the collecting of the army . Whafrog: what do you mean with"unless you resort to normal captains, which kind of defeats the purpose." do you mean theme-wise? Do you know if the army options of the units are the same in the new books as in the Legions of ME and Gondor in flames (for numenor), or the little MoM rulebook lists/unit descriptions? i want to buy the new book eventually but if it is the same i can do a little bit of list building/testing/planning and maybee some converting orso before i have the book. (basically i mean are the units you can take for high elves/numenor the same with the equipment options and point costs). Tough i read somewhere that there are no profiles for units currently unrealeased in the new books and i think the LOME book had some sort of a siege spear throwing unit in it for high elves (? not at home right now). Thanks for the help so far anyways! |

dctimon wrote: Whafrog: what do you mean with"unless you resort to normal captains, which kind of defeats the purpose." do you mean theme-wise? Yep, I just meant theme-wise. I figured most people who want to build a Numenorian army also want to include the major heroes, but maybe that's not the case here. If you're playing with friends, there's no reason you can't add a little fluff, take a basic captain, name him, add 1 point of Might and make him cost 5 points more. Or use the Gondor Kings of Men profile. dctimon wrote: Do you know if the army options of the units are the same in the new books as in the Legions of ME and Gondor in flames (for numenor), or the little MoM rulebook lists/unit descriptions? I don't think the Numenorians have changed. High Elves have changed in that they come with heavy armour and you can't remove it. But the costs are the same, so its easy to figure out. I think the hero profiles are the same as well. For the elves, I like to have a couple of elf blades, but only in smaller numbers, e.g. a 12 man war band: 4 bows, 6 or 7 spears/shields, 1 or 2 blades. Some like more, some like none. There was an elf siege weapon in LoME but I doubt we'll ever see a model. |

The various heros are amazing for them, even though the Numenoreans are decidely weaker than the High Elves. Isildur is only 100pts, but he's a 3A, 3W uber-hero who can take on most anything else worth 100pts. Gil-Galad can take on anything. Period. Elendil can take on most things and has a bit more survivability than Gil-Galad, but can scythe through some of the bigger things like Gil-Galad can. Against a horde, he's amazing. Elrond is very tough to kill, Vilya means that he's 50% harder to kill than Elendil or other heros with comparable stats. He can also devastate a pike block with no problem with his magic. The warriors have been covered. |

Well yesterday i got my 45 Elf wariors (well 1 is broken) of ebay and today i bougt 40 numenor warriors for just over 10 bucks . i got 3 elven spearman so far but i need to get some more of those and then i guess ill build up to more numenor bowman/spearman. I got a box of minas tirith wariors which i just might proxy for now. Maybe i will get me a box of galadrim, i do like the models as well (i like their elvensword pose a lot better then the one the high elves have. i guess i see if i can convert some high elves to have different poses with their blade). When i get myself the rulebook ill try to make a list but i guess i might have to buy the kingdoms of men also for the numenor units eventually? Its nice to have some numbers for the army cause if i want to give war of the ring a try i have a solid start. How many points levels is a regular WotR game would you guys say? |
