Hey fellas whats up? Ok so I have a modor army that should be close to 1000 points soon(not the biggest but thats fine I have had good success with it in the past). Im looking forward to expanding my army I know what In want in general, more trolls, more orcs more everything. I have 6 companies of wargs but...... I also want some morgul Knights but im not sure if i should get them they look fun and simple to paint however I want to know what your guys think when you compare them to mordor wargs. Morgal knights have a "F" 4 BUT "S" 3 compared to wargs with "F" 3 BUT "S"4. At the moment its seems pretty equal fight BUT.... morgul knights do have somthing different they casue terror and they have a handy 1+ to wound on the charge becasue of there lancers. Now you would way say morgul knights are they choice of the day, however they are 15 points per company to field more than wargs. So what I want to know is what you guys think, do you have any experience, tactics and opinions that could help my desicion? thanks By the way this is for an WOTR army. |

If you are looking for competitiveness and which formation is likely to perform best on the battlefield I would go with the Morgul Knights. When comparing them you left out the Knights biggest advantage, a high defense. As a moria player with lots of Wargs I can say that Def4 does not make for a long lasting formation. On the other hand I think I have more fun with my Wargs than I would with more traditional cavalry types. |

Wargs are $30, knights are $40...not a big difference, and the plastic knights look great (I prefer them to the old metal versions). |

If you already have 6 companies of Wargs I would go for the Morgul Knights. Keep in mind the two units have very different combat roles: the Knights are more of a "charge-headlong-into-the-enemy" unit, whereas Wargs are best used in small formations as flanking/harassing units (in my opinion). I run my Wargs in 3-company formations with no upgrades--sure they can't take on a shieldwall from the front but for 60 points they are still devastating when hitting flanks. And as whafrog said, the new Knights look great |

The Wargs are definitely "light cavalry". The Defense of the Knights makes a huge difference for longevity, but the Prowler special rule and high strength of the Wargs means they can be very effective if operated in several small (~3 company) harassing Formations. Smaller Formations or medium/weak units like this are also often ignored by players more focused on taking down your big blocks. This is especially true of opponents that are leveraging Might/Magic or other "limited" resources in their primary tactics. If you have a 6-Company block of Morgul Knights, with a good leader in there as well, it's going to be "seen" a lot more on the board by most players. But if you can have one or two Wargs get a flank/rear charge on an enemy the same turn the Knights hit them from the front (or flank!) then it will really help. |

Just a quick reminder, Morgul Knights are a rare formation (unless with Dark Marshal as General) and they have a four companies per formation limit, which I think is lame but whatever. Morgul Knights are great because if they have an Hero (Epic or Not), as Beowulf 03809 said, the opponent is going to even more wary of them but even without a Hero they look 'scary' so opponents tend to wary of them regardless. Makes a wonderful distraction. Also they become more lethal with Fortunes such as Tormented Steeds (Str 4 with +1 To Hit) or Armour of Udun (Defense 7(8)). I have no experience with or against Wargs, but Morgul Knights are better used for head-on charges as the enemy is going to be a little too wary to be caught flanked by these guys. I've found Terror isn't really effective unless the enemy formations are not led by Epics or inspired by a nearby one so avoid relying on it to save you from being countercharged or flanked. |

I have about, oh, 30 Morgul Knights! I'd suggest looking at the 'Knights of Morgul' Battlehost; you get 4 quite handy special rules, and the only caveat is you must take the Mouth of Sauron and/or The Dark Marshall. Oh no, how terrible, having to take a Ringwraith... I've used them to great effect in the past, you can build a great army around this battlehost. I had to deccide between The Knights of Morgul and the host that has four+ winged Nazgul. I went for the former and am very happy with the decision. The models DO look great and are exceptionalluy easy to paint up. The +1 to hit on charge is phenomenal, and that they cause terror is surprisingly useful, esp with The Mouth and wraith messing up the enemies courage all over the place. Morgul Knights are great fun to use. 4 coys might seem few, but they have high toughness and R2. They're tough, hit hard with that +1, look brilliant...and I imagine they'd eat Wargs for breakfast! |

Ok yeh thats true about the courage being screwed up and stuff. You know its funny cos, my mat went to gw and bought a hive tyrant and gw gave him a lucky dip, guess what it was a box set of morgul knights, he doesnt collect lotr so gave them to me for 10$ bucks how good is that. so now i have 6 companies of morguls knights. lol i better get a ring wraith now and put em in the formations so i can cause terror better |

You have to split them into 2 formations because the max no of companies they can go to is 4. |
