Take a look: Gimli Dwarf captain (shield, throwing axes) Banner bearer 9 Khazad Guard 20 dwarf warriors with shields 20 warriors with two-handed axes 18 warriors with bows 70 models, 18 bows, 5 might. Feel free to suggest changes, of course. |

Good numbers. I only play against dwarves, not with them so my suggestions are only for what I would hate to meet. I think you should exchange as many of the dwrves with 2h axes to archers or D7 dwarves as possible and perhaps ad an additional banner since dwarves don't get spears. |

The list looks good. May I suggest swapping the captain for Balin? He's much better value. Also, I might look for some rangers and iron guard to swap in as all your dwarves probably won't be able to get into combat anyway. |

I agree about Balin vs a captain, at these point levels the extra stats are handy. Also, two more bows and you can have 2 volley lines. |

I would also drop the captain for balin w/ axe (if possible) and get one or two more bowmen. Gimli Balin (W/ axe) Banner bearer 9 Khazad Guard 17 dwarf warriors with shields 17 warriors with two-handed axes 21 warriors with bows 67 models, 21 bows, 6 might, Two volleys. |

Thanks avenger, that list also used up the leftover point that I had before. This is something else I've come up with using spud's suggestion: Gimli Balin with durin's axe banner bearer 8 Khazad guard 15 warriors with shields 15 warriors with two handed axes same amount of bows 3 Iron guard (I only have three anyway) A few less models on the table, but hopefully a bit 'punchier' in combat |

That's not even 700 points you have in that list there. What are you trying to say? Also, I don't think Durin's Axe is that great myself. |

so far im not liking the list, reasons being: 1. you have no anti monster - its 800pts, there is bound to be a mordor troll or spider queen, and you have nothing to really kill it.... (if he plays well bows wont help) 2. you have no magic, so again you cant neutralise trolls and the like or move banners away ect.... 3. you have no good cc heros - at 800pts you need to be packing at least 1 hard hitting model... 4. you dont have any spears, at 800pts you really should get some allies as you wont be able to get them all in CC at the same time... so you probably will have a bunch of dwarves sitting around waiting for their turn to fight.... 5. you have no speed. again if you dont have any of the above stuff you should make up for it some other way, and you dont do that here as well. the pros 1. your dwarves and your model count is in the 70s, so if the enemy takes a colourless force like you then you should roll him. although i really think that you should get more khazards or something.... if you dont have great heros then most of your troops should be l337 (soz the gamer inside me couldnt resist ) over all i think you need to spice up your list, what i mean by that is to get something fearsome or make up for your weaknesses (ie, ally in GC for spears and bows, then ur dwarves can all be CC), or get magic ect... I always think that your army should have something really scary (in wotr i pack a dragon ) |

Okay. @ Shadowswarm: 1. For that, I could take an ent or a king's champion. Haven't used either berfor so not sure which to take. 2. ATM I have all three named Istari to choose from but again not sure as not much experience. 3. Well, I guess I could put Dain Ironfoot in.... 4. Yeah I know, but I don't have any good guys with spears so I would have to buy a box set or something to fix that. 5. Yeah, same as above. I suppose I could put in my SKODA. 1. Hmm..you might be right. In my collection I do have 28 Khazad guard. |

I reckon they'd go alright Dwarves for the win |

I think both 1 and 2 can be dealt with by a wizard, Saruman is the best but you can take other if you wish, Gandalf wold fit best fluff wise. More Khazad Guard would be good, and a few Iron Guard never hurt but you will need spears. Arnor or Grey Company are good options for this. |

You really have to decide what you want. Any dwarf army is going to be disadvantaged in a scenario where speed is needed. Even if you do have 10 or so cavalry that won't neccisarily help; you don't want to send those cavalry rushing ahead against the opponents whole army. To me a dwarf army with lots of defence seven and 65-ish numbers is a nightmare in anything but sieze the prize or something like that that requires only speed. And don't tell me that you don't have a cc hero, Balin and Gimli are both great at carving through troops, especially if you have them backed up with a banner. You just have to make sure that you support them well, their not sauron, you can't throw just them against a whole horde of guys and hope to crush them all. I have done well in quite a few games with just dwarves, there's no need for spears, you just need to adjust your tactics. Use your extra guys to flood around a flank and swarm and trap him. If you want more khazad you could go for something like this: Balin w/ axe Gimli banner 22 shield 20 bow 14 khazad 3 iron 20 bows, 800 points exactly, 6 might, 62 units If you want magic (saruman) that will drop your number quite a bit: Saruman gimli banner 19 shield 18 bow 13 khazad 3 iron 18 bows (only one volley), 799 points, 6 might (but three on saruman for blasting), 56 units |

Sorry for the double post, but I thought it would be better than one HUGE post. A list with spears: (Durins folk and GC) dwarf captain (shield throwing weapons) 6 RoTN w/ spear 4 dwarf w/ shield 12 dwarf w/ bow 21 khazad guard 22 rangers w/ spear 40 bows (three volleys), 799 points, 8 might, 66 units (but lots of defence four) And finally an army with cavalry: Faramir (ha, horse, lance) Gimli 2 dwarf w/ shield 10 dwarf w/ bow 20 khazad 8 knights of MT w/ shield 20 warriors of MT w/ shield, spear 10 bows , 800 points, 6 might, 62 units, 8 cavalry |

the reason why gimli is a terrible hero at 800pts: nazgul at 800pts there is a VERY high chance that you will encounter some magic... if you took Saruman then he could wreak all kinds of havoc. here is a link to a forum on tla, BM explains how to counter nazgul w/ Saruman http://www.terrainguild.com/thelastalli ... =12&t=3267 Also, i would strongly suggest getting more khazads, throw in a few iron guard, and ally in teh GC so you can use them as spears and so you can make the most of your dwarves in CC Saruman Gimli 21 khazads 5 dwarves w/ shield (to go on flanks and shield) 4 ROTN w/ sp 20 Rangers w/ sp 52 models, 24 bows, a long D7 Str4 battle line w/ 2 attacks. a good CC hero if combined w/ saruman. and saruman, the counter to everything (nazgul? 18" 3+ compel, horde army? 4+ SB....) |

So you wouldn't consider having just KG and dwarf archers to be powergaming? {aD}??? wrote: Whoa you have 28 KG! I only have 6 of them. Yeah, I went on a KG shopping spree for my WOTR army. Anyhow, the idea behind an 800 pt list is the upcoming tournament, read about it here: viewtopic.php?f=62&t=20301 Well, I'll experiment with these lists sometime and see how they go. I think its time for some painting.... |

Bump. So I've thought about it a bit more, and I've come up with this: Saruman Gimli 14 Dwarf warriors with shields 18 Khazad guard 3 Iron guard 10 dwarf rangers (bows, throwing axes) 1 banner bearer 6 might, 10 bows, 48 models, 797 points and magic. |

The army is actually only 777 points and you have 50 models but that's still far too little for 800 points. First changes, drop the throwing axes or the bows on the rangers, don't have both. Some spears are nearly critical at this points' level. I suggest allying in Beregond and some WoMT with spears and then drop the banner. I'd also replace all the dwarf warriors with shield and iron guard with KG if you have enough. Sooooo.... The Wizards: Saruman-150 points Erebor: Gimli-90 points 22 KG- 242 points 10 dwarf rangers with bows-110 points Tower of Ecthelion: Beregond-25 points 20 WoMT- 180 points Total: 797 points, 7 might, 55 models (not much but supported KG will munch through just about anything), and 10 shots |

I don't have WOMT. Or beregond for that matter. I'll have to go and get a box set if I have to have spears in the list, not to mention painting them all... Also, your list is 787 points. |

Also, your list is 787 points. Oh yes, I thought rangers were 11 points (don't have Khazad-dum book). In which case, I would just get another ranger or perhaps give gimli an elven cloak. A non-spear list can still work but you'll need more guys than you have in your list. |
