my advice is to add banners to your knights and Warriors or rather which ever group Boromir is not going to be with and also increase the size of the knights to 6 companies at 3 it is to small to live through any bow fire also split the rangers in to a 4 company Rangers of Ithilien and 2 company rangers of gondor this will give more versatility in you options with your ambushers and a group that is good for holding smaller fortified locations. |

Just a thought but you might consider taking Axemen of Lossarnach instead of the Citadel Guards. They are all around more versatile (being able to choose whether to use their weapons as 2handers or pikes) and they're stats are very similar excepting of course the -1 courage and -1 str (which is more then made up for when you use the 2handers) A pretty good trade off, but the best part is they are cheaper then the CG. This is of course assuming that you aren't taking the CG's as part of a theme. |

straycat, to me your force looks overall a bit 'bitsy' in the unit counts (aside from the legendaries) and you have units in there I personally would never take. If this is a theme thing, then disregard, but I'd chop Citadel Guards and Peregrin right off. If you wanted the Epic, you could possibly use the Isildur staline and name him as a Gondorian (or Dol Amroth) captain. Boromir's banner seems like it could be very handy, with him jumping around to different units for charges but saving you the permanent unit upgrades. I haven't tried his banner though, preferring to have Aragorn for 25pts cheaper than that. Boromir without his banner (you could spend the same points to get 'desperate heroics' or whatever the might renewal fortune is) is worthwhile as well. Knights probably need to be larger, but if you were intending to hold them back behind the line until later in the battle so they can sneak around and charge flanks, that could work. Ithilien Rangers are too large for an ambush unit. I have found Bolthrowers difficult to use. They are best vs monsters but Osgilitath Vets are also good vs monsters and the rest of the time boltthrower range is a huge handicap. Their use would be to give an edge in a shooting battle, but that is unlikely vs a non-stupid opponent given 2' range. Any army with a high def footline is probably also going to have longer range seige (seige bows, dwarf ballistas, isengard ballistas, fallen realms could ally it in). Axemen are very useful, a definite obvious choice if you are willing to convert/buy metals. They do suffer vs shooting though. Them with Boromir on the charge to a flank (heroic fight!) would be very, very nice. |
