Hi FL I'm leaning towards building a MM force, but again iv never played or played against the army, so could you give me an idea of what to collect to make a good army? I don't think I could afford to buy lots and lots of metal prowlers so think I will have to go down the conversion route, any advice and help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Well goblins are harder to convert in prowlers than blackshields... Anywayaxes conversion is the mose good conversion for this... Some basic units are goblins and trolls 8)

For prowlers just give normal goblins hood, and converrt their spears into axes.

Well, if Goblins wielding 2-handed spears (a weapon that doesn't actually exist in WotR) is not sufficient to show them as having 2-handed weapons, then taking the spears and adding axe blades should be good. Either kit bash a whole slew of axe and pole arm heads or cut lots of little tiny bits of plasticard, probably trimming down the spearheads while your at it.

As for what to put in an army,

Most any type of goblins are OK. The Blackshields and Prowlers are clearly better than normal Moria Goblins but not to the point of not fielding them. Honestly, the choice of what goblins to include probably comes down to whay limitations you have on miniatures. If you can convet the better formations, go that route, if not, stick with the regular gobbos. I did get a blister of Blackshields to function as captains in my army though because the minis do look nice.

Wild Wargs and giant Spiders are pretty good. There are lots of low cost alternatives for spiders, including WFB spiders the now out of print Skull Pass intro box.

Bats and Spider broodlings don't see a lot of play, but can be useful in the right circumstances.

When it comes to monsters pretty much flavor to taste. I haven't had much luck with cave trolls, the Dragon is significantly better than the Balrog but the Balrog is plastic. Don't have much experience with the Cave Drake or the Spider Queen. Stone Giant rocks. Shelob also makes a very flavorful ally.

Because you didn't use to be able to buy wild wargs you had to buy warg riders and just not assemble the riders, so it was listed there so people could buy them as wild wargs, then they released wargs seperately and didnt bother moving them

Check out this thread, it has a discussion on what to use as a Stone giant.

Yeah again sorry FL. Another Question for you though FL, if I was to start building a MM army of say 1000 points to start with, what list would be a good base starting army? Thanx

Sadly, I'm lousy at giving advice on army lists, all I can really offer is some general advice.

I prefer a core of a large, high def infantry to hold my center, whether blackshields or moria goblins with shields is up to you, with a couple of 4 company cavalry formations and maybe smaller infantry formation to try and get some flank charges, with a couple of monsters for general support or to deal with particularly troublesome targets.

I am considering breaking up my main formation into 2 somewhat smaller ones for the flexibility, but so far I haven't tried that.

I personally don't use any Ringwraiths or any other allies, just the 2 (very good) Epic heroes that the MM list has, despite the fact that I would like another spellcaster, because none of them really seem to fit the theme of the army. I make up for the lack of Epic Heroes by taking a captain in most formations.

Also, I heartily recommend the Goblin Drum though others may disagree.

Would you put the drummer in with your large formation? And what monsters do you use? In say a 1000 point game

I personally put a drummer in all my goblin formations. In small formations of prowlers I like the move buff and banner effects, and in the large one the banner and panic reroll is real nice, and the taskmaster effect is great with anything.

In a 1000 point army I would probably try to not include any monsters, just to expensive. If I was short on minis I miiiight include one of either shelob or stone giant. 3 cave trolls might also be useful, so far I only have 2 cave troll minis and 2 of them aren't really effective, but I always read that trolls should be deployed in groups of 3 or more.

Ah, yes. The 'Troll Spear'. Seen that in action more than once, even at the 1000pts level. My one friend who does play Moria always leads the attack with her wave of trolls (at 2000pts its definitely a wave) and then follows hard on its heels with her two giant Goblin formations (1 maxed out at 9 Companies and Full Command, the other at 6 companies and full command). Its proven to be the undoing of Rohirrim, Gondorians, Wood Elves, Fallen Realms and Mordor on more than one occassion. The 'Troll Spear' is usually a minimum of 3 Cave Trolls and that's usually plenty for an enemy to dispatch before the Goblin Horde runs them over.

When you say the troll spear do you mean 3 trolls all bunched together? Or spread about

How does she get the trolls moving fast enough? One of the problems I have had with cave trolls is how slow they are, not being able to at the double generally has them arriving at the battle, like, 2 turns after all the goblins and wargs and stuff (move 9 goblins with AtD, I frequently charge on the first turn)
