After I've finished Isengard (just a few weeks left now) I plan on starting a Dwarf Army.

Leader: Dain-200
Hero: Gimli-175

Common: Dwarf Warriors-4 coy, shields-160
Dwarf Warriors-4 coy, shields-160
Dwarf Warriors-4 coy, 2HW-160
Dwarf Warriors-4 coy, 2HW-160

Rare: Khazad Guard Kinband-3 coy, Shieldbearer-175
Iron Guard Kinband-3 coy, Shieldbearer-175
Vault Warden Kinband-2 coy-140 (I know they suck, but they look awesome, and I don't know anyone fielding Ruin casters)

The only thing that worries me about it is the lack of anything ranged of any kind.

A list like this, your tactics are at the mercy of your opponent. If they have a decent amount of range, particularly crossbows or seige weapons, they'll just settle in on their side and wait for you to trudge across to them. In which case, you're going to need to try and rush them with AtD or Heroic Moves, which your army is lacking with only 2 Epics and 2 Shield Bearers. If they are combat-heavy, then your deployment is going to be crucial because Dwarves are not fast so you need to be in position by end of Turn One. Vault Wardens are not great but they make a decent anvil against cavalry and infantry (not so Monsters). Use dwarf units in tandem (ex: Shield Dwarves locking the enemy in place while 2HW dwarves flank) or the enemy will just grind you down. Hope this helps a little.

Thank you. Any suggestions on how to make it more gunline-resistant?

Hi, I have played quite a few games with dwarves, I would always take archers. The advice above is correct, when I play against dwarves I sit back and shoot them, they lumber across the field and take heavy casualties...

When I have used them I have 2-3 comps and use these effectively to target monsters and flanking troops - IMO they are a must!

Check out my blog, which has some dwarf battle reports where they haven't done so well...

Good luck!

You could:
a) Take some "gunline" troops of your own though not Dwarf archers (such a stupidly short range and only S2 at 9") but Dwarf Rangers (Yes, I normally hate Dwarf Rangers but in WotR they are the only useful Dwarf ranged troops. Also take a look at the Dwarf Ballistae though they're only good against large formations.

b) Take more Captains or Shield Bearers so you can Heroic Move/At the Double your way across the board and only give them a round or two of shooting.

c) Ally troops with decent range in like Minas Tirith Archers or Gondor Rangers to help in the Shooting Phase.

if you wanted to think competively, you might as well swap all the Iron Guards for more Khazad Guards since they're better, but its up to you.

@ Wayunderthemountain. I took option A), and here's the new list:

Leader: Gimli - 175
Hero: Balin - 100

Battlehost: Drárs Wardens - 50
Drars Rangers (or whatever, the legendary)- 3 coy - 210
Dwarf Ranger Kinband - 3 coy, bows - 120
Dwarf Ranger Kinband - 3 coy, bows - 120
Iron Guard Kinband - 3 coy - 150
------------------------------------------------------
Common: Dwarf Warrior Kinband - 4 coy, shields - 160
Dwarf Warrior Kinband - 3 coy, (either shields or THW, can't decide) - 160

Rare: Vault Warden Kinband - 2 coy -140
Khazad Guard Kinband - 3 coy - 150

The battlehost allows me to move full distance and fire, as well as auto-passing ATD, which IMO justifies having to take two formations that are just good, not great.
The 2nd Warrior Kinband, I can't decide whether to make them shields or 2HW. The 2HW can really dish out the pain for a not very high cost, but I feel I need a more solid center, ie. more shields.

@ Gothmog. I'm not playing competive, I love the Iron Guard models and fluff, and they are a requirement for the Battlehost, so I won't swap them out.

Take shields. The Iron Guard and Khazad Guard will act as your striking units while the regular warriors hold the line.

That's settled then. Thanks for all the good advice.
