Can anyone advise whether the Dweller in the Dark figure was ever released in metal? Or is it FC only?

No, he's FC only. There was a set of tentacles released in metal, but they were direct order only.

GKA - you are referring to Dweller in the Deep, Redman was asking about Dweller in the Dark. I think the answer is the same though, only finecast.

Redman, here is a link about one person's adventure with the Dweller, hopefully this was the first batches of finecast, GW has improved somewhat.

Yeah, you're right. The dweller in the dark was also only ever released in fine cast. Numerous reports were made by gamers of the flimsiness of his ankle joints and that he would often break there.
