I have often noticed that while I'm painting a figure, it becomes more than just a figure when I have added a certain color or painted a certain feature. Right now I have just done some base colors on Gandalf on his horse and he is just something to paint.

For Gandalf will it be when his robe is painted grey? For armored figures, it is when I paint the chainmail that they start to become "alive". What does it for you?

I find that once there's some shading in the eyes, it starts to look as though they're searching around my workbench for something or someone to fight!

For me, it's not 'til I've used them on the table and they've won me games or given me a great time. Take Gil-Galad for example: he's a staple in all my lists, and because of what he's done for me, I have ashamedly become somewhat emotionally attached to the model in such a way that when an official mounted one come out, I will be reluctant to buy it to replace my conversions. Am I the only one?

I would say that they come alive once the face is finished, even if most of the other parts are uncompleted.

For me only when it's near completion, when I'm layering and highlighting. Before that point I feel very depressed about it and feel it will never be finished and that I should just throw all my paintbrushes in a fire.
