I suspect the bloke who's running Dale in my Battle Companies will seize on this option at some point - has any one tried making a a mouted Warrior of Dale? I think the cloaks and the way they're moulded might be a giant PITA...

I've been told cloaks are a good place to start learning sculpting. you can use newly sculpted cloak to high any rough areas of the conversion.

There are numerous old "high elf" cavalry conversions you can use as a guide

If you're not tied to GW models, then I think the Fireforge Mongol Cavalry would be a good starting point, but I would definitely do a bit of conversion work to make them distinctly Dale, so that it doesn't look like Mongols randomly rode into Middle-Earth. Give them cloaks and fur-lined helmets, and maybe even consider press-molding a Dale shield for them.

If sticking to GW minis, and price is really no issue, then the Khandish riders, who have apparently been discontinued, seem like the best first option. After them, perhaps Riders of Rohan. In either case, you'll want cloaks, helmets, and shields to identify them as men of Dale.
