Post subject:  Converting to banner bearer/captain

Hi,

I was fooling around with some gold paint and I made one of my mini's a bit fancy (below's the picture before the "make-over").

A friend suggested I'd convert it to a captain or banner bearer, because he would stand out in my army if he was used as a normal warrior.

Anyone got some ideas to do this?

Image
I painted a golden line on the edge of the red cloth.
Might do the same on the green cloth, r maybe a silver line, I don't know.

Any ideas how to make him look like a captain so it's reeeally clear he is a captain, or convert him to a banner bearer?

Do you have green stuff?
If so you could sculpt a plume on the helm perhaps? (they're really easy to sculpt, honest)

Or if you're feeling adventurous maybe you could try sculpting some chainmail in the bit where his clothes split for his legs?

But if you don't have any green stuff, gold trim and perhaps a more interesting base are the way to go I'd say 8)

I don't have green stuff :/
Which brand do you recommend?

The base wasn't finished, it'll look like this when finished:

Easiest way for a banner bearer would be to drill a hole into his shield hand and to remove the buckle too. Then make a banner pole out of wire and the banner out of paper.
If you like, have a look at my selfmade Rohan banner bearer. Maybe you find some useful ideas: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=24858&start=20 (You've got to scroll down a bit. Sorry for the some shameless self promotion :P )

Nice job on the banner bearer conversion!
Is it hard to drill a hole into the plastic?
Well, could you give me some more info on how you exactly did it? ^^

Not really that hard, especially with a decent drill bit (ie not blunt). Just make sure you drill straight and take your time. No point rushing and messing it up. I use the hobby drill from GW and it does the job - perfect for little bits like that.

As southern Dunedain says.. it's not that hard if you have a proper drill. I bought one from "Army Painter" on amazon, as it was a lot cheaper than the Citadel drill and I am totally happy with it! It drills through plastic like t's butter.. ^^
I even drilled through white metal with it (planned an Eomer conversion, you can see it on the last page of my WIP ;) ).
Important thing is, and here I again only can repeat what SD said: drill straight, but slowly. No need to rush.

Looks like I'll be getting myself a drill and some green stuff then ;D

You can see the model in my WIP viewtopic.php?f=50&t=25430&p=320458#p320458

For now I've only given him a special paint job as you can see!

Interesting coincidence, because I'm just painting up my own conversion of the same figure to a captain.

My background inspiration is part Derfel in Bernard Cornwell's Arthur books, and partly what I see in the mirror. So, I've given him a plume (I paint those red in 'un-named Rohan captains), a bigger beard painted grey to signify age, a belly highlighted with a little shading where his leather armour has faded, and taken off his left hand to indicate an old battle wound. He's leader of those who've seen too many winters.

I'll stick some photos up when he's finished.

Wow! Sounds awesome!
I was planning on adding a plume as well.
The beard sounds great as well, I might consider doing that too now ;D
Your whole concept sounds nice, are all the warriors fighting under his command provided with the necessary grey beards as well? :D

And I would love to see some pictures!

Looking good Delirivm! You've done a good job on shading/highlighting and the freehand is nice too!

For angularity's tips: sounds good!
Actually I added a plume to one of my RoR so that I could use hhim as captain if I needed one ;D And the grey hair? Well.. I've given that to my captain from the Rohan command troup (the one with the dying orc. If you like to see that.. well you know where to find my WIP lol.. I start to feel bad to talk so much about my WIP in your thread, sry!)

Thanks!
Don't feel bad about it, it's a great WIP thread after all ;)
How did you make that banner? Green stuff/ paper? (love the freehand!)

Post subject:  Re: Converting to banner bearer/captain

Thank you so much for the compliments
For the banner I used thick paper that I simply had wrapped around a pen in different directions to get the "curvy" look!

Two months late...however, my backlog is now down to 34 figures, from over 200, so I'm not doing so bad.

Here, at last, are the pictures of that conversion I did, plus a couple of other Rohan types. One is the captain described above, another is my version of Erkenbrand, converted from the hornblower by use of a spare Royal Guard sword arm, then there's the mounted captain, made by straightening the sword-arm, and a couple of Outriders, one of which came from a spare Eomer. I like the khaki-brown colours on them, it ties in with the idea of sneaking around scouting out the enemy, rather than wearing green which really shows up.

Other than that, please steal any ideas you like, but don't judge the paint jobs too harshly, they're meant for the gaming table not the exhibition hall!!ImageImageImageImage

Wow, I love the conversions! Simple but effective.
I indeed might steal some ideas here, since I planned to make outriders too..
The captain is very cool too! Nice details on the base!

Post subject:  Re: Converting to banner bearer/captain

Those are some nice conversions Angularity.
I like the beard on the captain.

I'm converting some of my Rohan Archers to Outriders as well.
So far, I've only given 8 models (4foot/4mounted) horse hair plumes on their helmets with some greenstuff. Will post pictures after my exams.
Converting a warrior to a captain too, I think I'll add a plume to his helmet as well.
My banner bearer is almost finished, just need to add the banner to the pole.

Thanks DurinsBane! I still have those from the bgime magazines, but I don't know whether I'll use them or not. They're great if you don't want to spend too much time on banner bearers but I think I'll create one myself ^^
But nonetheless, thanks!
