Is it best to do the base then attach the model or attach the model then do the base?

Cheers.

There's a question with a dozen different answers.

Personally, I'd assemble the model, glue to base and paint it before doing the base (unless you're doing a special "built" base that the model will be placed on).

You will now get half a dozen members arguing a different case.

Its really up to you and what works best for how you like to build and paint your models. Try a few different ways.

Thanks for your fast reply, much appreciated. I will probably attach mine first, then do a base. It's my first model, doing it now;P

I always attach my models to the bases first, before I do them or paint the model. If you are doing cavalry, paint the horse and the rider separately before you glue them together

Your first model!

Have fun, let us know how it turns out.

(Edit) There are loads of work in progress threads here, have a look, you'll get some great ideas.

When I'm organised, I assemble and cleanup the model (removing flash and mouldlines). I then glue sand/slate to the base and basecoat the entire model (usually spray can).

If I glue the sand to the base after having painted the model, then I use an ink or a watered down paint to stain or wash the sand. Works quite well, as long as I don't make it too thin.

What he said, it also helps in doing it a bit faster because you can base coat the base with the spray and it helps to seal it.

As SMORG and KO said. When you glue your model to the base there will almost always be gaps. If you put it on the base first then you can easily cover these gaps with your basing sand right away. When you basecoat the whole thing at once the base coat spray will help seal the sand as well. Also, if you apply basing after painting the model it's slower and more difficult, for me at least, since you are needing to be careful of the model.

Personally I usually paint my base next, before painting the model itself. The main reason being I don't need to be as precise when painting the earth tones. If I brush the leg or boot, it's ok at this stage. Later when I paint the model if I get a little boot color paint on the base it's a smaller and easier touch up (repainting sand is nearly always going to be easier than repainting a washed and shaded leg, for example).

And I do the opposite, painting the base last. If a little of the base colours get on their legs or boots, no biggie. Auto weathering! :D

My thought exactly, otherwise, when painting Goblin town Goblins for instance you may end up with pinks spots on the base which loks much sillier then getting brown on their feet and legs.

I always paintt in large batches of models, and then do a massed basing at the end, it is fun, but unlike DMS, the mdoels are stuck to their bases before hand.

Thanks for all your replies, it is much appreciated. I think I will attach my model first and then do the base. As Gothmog said, if you go wrong, it is auto-weathering! :-D
