Post subject:  How to Paint Blond Hair

Hi guys,

I've had a bit of a problem with Gildor and Glorfindel- I can't get their hair colour right. Can you please tell me how you did this with them or any other blond person?

Thanks,

LordElrond

I'm not sure if the color has changed, but I have found that Snakebite Leather is a very good base to work from. You shade it down to various amounts with a watered brown wash, then highlight with the original color again.

If you want to go even lighter Bleached Bone is a good mix to Snakebite Leather for the base coat to lighten it without getting too yellow or tan.

Bubonic brown, hilighted by adding more and more bleached bone.

D'oh. I bet I meant Bubonic Brown rather than Snakebite Leather. :oops: Snakebite is better for light/medium brown hair.

I HAVE used Snakebite as a basecoat to work up from, adding more and more Bleached for each successive highlight. I should mention that I've used this for Theoden, whom I consider to have a dirtier blonde than Elves.

I used to use bronzed flesh for blond elven hair and work it up with bleached bone and white, not all the way to white of course.

I use simple Bubonic Brown mixed 1:1 with white as a basecoat, and then wash brown and highlight to taste.

I paint mine with averland sunset base and then wash with Reikland fleshshade, then i highlight averland sunset over raised hair.

Comes out more like fair hair than bright blonde but i like it on my galadhrim, not so californian that way....

@jay...
could you post a picture of this? It seems the most simple way so far.

I've just painted an Anglo Saxon Warlord blond using a mid brown basecoat (bestial brown).
I then drybrushed with Desert Yellow.
Then highlighted using Bubonic Brown.

Not the best scheme, but its ok if you don't want the hassle of mixing paints for sucessive highlights (my DY and BB were very old, thick and partially dry paint).
