I am trying to learn to sculpt. This is my first attempt at the bird for the seeing seat. I might as well be 10 playing with play doe. The shape is exactly to the plan in the journey book. I think think the wings look too much like a leaf. Suggestions please |

I think it looks alright, the one thing I would change is the feather pattern on the wings. Real birds have feathers going one way off their wings, so the split that you have running down seems a little unnatural. Of course, if you've taken the design off a shot from the film then they may have decided to go that way too. I'm not sure, but I think if you designated one side of the wing as the muscley bit (hope you know what I mean) then sculpt feathers off that, it might look better. Aside from that, it's far better than I could do! |

Well I'd say google is a good option for this, so have a good look around that. Is this the kind of pattern your trying to achieve? Hope this helps Drum |

Your post was helpful. I was looking for something more stylized. I may try to make the body and wings separately. |

I need to do a lot to the other side. I need to do four so I at least I will get better. |

Something like this might work, then in terms of a more stylised look it would be relatively easy to alter here and there. |

Cool that is a good example I will try that style next. Who made it? |

I'm not sure sorry, I just had a look around for bird wing statues and found that. Figured it might help get the shape of the feathers on the wing right; hope it's been of value. |

That's a very good start, especially considering how ambitious that is to start learning on.I assume that you've read ebob's tutorials, so I'll just suggest that you make a custom sculpting tool. I've got one that started life as a spade shaped sewing needle (I think it was for working with leather ) that I put into the handle of a cheap, plastic paintbrush. Now it's my No. 1 sculpting tool, even over the X-acto knife. I think something like that would be perfect for shaping whatever feathers you want to make. |

The Hirst Art Seat I made is 5mm to wide for the template I used for the birds. I can trim them down. That won't be a problem because I need to make better feet or claws for the birds. They need lots of work. I am going to finish this but I found a better plain and I will try it next. My tree man looks a little too cartoonish for LOTR. I have not started on hands but I think I will make him throwing a tomb stone. I may make the other hand so that he can cast the Mage Knight daemon. He will be perfect for my Halloween game,Plan 9 from Elms Street I found the bird nest at a craft store. Perfect for another scene from the Hobbit. |
